Multitable limit holdem tournament - you're in 3rd chip position with about 15 players left, with about 3500 chips. Limits are 100/200. You're dealt A
8
on the big blind, one limper (2nd place in chips) and one all in call come to you, and you check. Flop comes down 5
10
8
, you bet and get raised by 2nd position, and you call. Turn is 8
, you check hoping to check raise, and opponent checks behind you. River is J
. You bet and get raised by opponent.Do you three bet or call?Answers below......I decide to three bet, and get capped by opponent, who I am sure now is beating me. I call, but he turns over 8 9, and I take down a 2300 pot and 2nd place. Correct move?

you told me about this the other day at the game, so i thought i'd give a lengthy response here.he limped in early position in what seems to be a pretty tight/aggressive game, so i'd either put him on big cards, or a mid pocket pair. i'd very much doubt he'd have suited connectors, suited one-gappers, or a low pocket pair, but given the skill of the player (or lack of), that could be a possibility as well.flop came 10-8-5, you bet, you got raised.this probably means he hit the 10. possible hands are A-10, K-10, Q-10, maybe A-A/K-K/Q-Q/J-J (if he was trying to slowplay preflop?) or even 10-10, 8-8 or 5-5. call was the correct play here. if he would raise with worse than top pair, he might have an 8 or a 5, but i would doubt that.turn came an 8. when you checked, he checked behind you. this is alarming. this means either:1. he raised for value on the flop but the 8 scared him, so he checked behind. now A-10, K-10, Q-10 as well as A-A/K-K/Q-Q/J-J look possible, and we can probably eliminate 10-10, 8-8, or 5-5.2. he raised for a free-card play on the flop. the flop was unsuited, so he couldn't have a flush draw (unless he did it with a backdoor spade draw, maybe A-10 of spades or some such hand, and the 8 scared him still). the only draws would be straight draws, either 7-6, 9-7 or J-9.the river came a J, you bet and got raised.J-10 suited might have hit top two here. he might have A-J and thinks he has the best hand now (maybe he raised on the flop thinking you were just taking a stab, which doesn't quite make sense, but bad players do that sometimes... again, depends on the skill level of the game and player).if he had 9-7, he hit his straight here, or if he had J-9, he might think his top pair is good here. he might raise here.if he had A-10, K-10, Q-10 or one of those high pocket pairs, he probably wouldn't raise here. if he had a set on the flop, he would have probably bet out on the turn. since he couldn't have 8-8, 5-5 would have probably bet on the turn (since weak players tend to get aggressive with vulnerable hands but slowplay better looking ones), but i could see a bad player trying to slowplay 10-10 on the turn, even though he was in position.finally, i would doubt he had an 8, since we took off that possibility on the flop. ignore the results for now, i wouldn't think he had an 8 given the flop raise and turn check. also, i took off the possiblity of an overpair since most players raise pre-flop with them and get aggressive with them on any board (he would have probably bet on the turn, the 8 wouldn't have scared him enough to check whereas another 10 might have). 10-10 is the only hand i could possibly see, but again, the turn check is just weird. it's possible, though, since some people will limp with it and slowplay the nut boat on the turn.so here are the possible hands i would put him on at the river:9-7J-9J-10A-JK-JQ-J10-10the only likely hands someone might play pre-flop are J-10 (suited probably), K-J, Q-J, and 10-10, and you're beating three of them. the fourth one is probably unlikely, but possible. i just can't see him limping with 9-7 or J-9 (suited or unsuited), but again, it's possible.since you're likely to be ahead given the elimination of a straight, an overpair, or a boat, i would three-bet my trip 8's here. you made the right play.it's really strange to see someone limp with 89 (probably suited) in such a tight/aggressive game when it's down to 15 people in a tournament. people just play bad i guess.aseem
