I guess donkeys who can't even spell poker shouldn't bother trying to satellite into the National Spelling Bee.

those are both pretty simple german words, if you've taken any german. but if you don't know basic german spelling constructions, you'd be in serious trouble.

Yeah, the runner up was a Canadian girl and coasted to heads up cos some of her words were of French origin and I assume that being Canadian, she's familiar with French. Her last 2 words were German and she got lucky guessing the 2nd last one. But "Weltschmerz" tripped her up. She spelt it as "Veltschmerz", showing her lack of German knowlege.

I didn't think that there would be much demand for it but eh ... what do I know?
What would be cool is if they ran a "Where are they now" show for previous winners of like 10 years ago.
And the 1996 winner is now serving slushies at jugo juice but at least they can give you the definition, use it in a sentence and provide the origin of whatever drink you ask for.
Don't get me wrong I still think those kids are pretty amazing to do what they do.

The Canadian runner up said "Well, that's the Spelling Bee." She said "I wasn't sure that I was right but I had a read from the chief judge that it was spelt with a V. So I went with my read and unfortunately, I missed. In order to survive in spelling bee, you must be willing to die"

Like for real?
Me and 3 friends sat down and watched a few rounds. I think we played like X bucks/person/word. So if I spell it right, and my two friends don't, they each owe $X. If everyone gets it right but me, then I owe $X to 3 people It was actually really fun. The best was when a word I absolutely knew how to spell (including "moloch" and a few others). It happened every once in a while.
The worst was when you tried getting fancy with a word, and everyone else just spelled it funetikly. And they were right... and you owed a quick 3X bucks.
I picked up like 20 units or so, and somebody else won like 10-12.
One friend was nearly breakeven, and the big/only loser was down like 30 units. The best part was, the guy who won the 10-12 units was a pretty crappy student in HS, and the guy who lost all the money was a National Merit scholar.
Sweeeet.

That whole thing was hilarious -- how about him and his buddy playing a video game, then a pause, and he says "see I told you there was no e on the end" -- they were playing a damn spelling game on Playstation or whatever. And regarding the basketball segment, he says "well I could be as good as Nash, and Jordan -- well, maybe not Jordan". Fantastic
And Wang, I made a bet on the winning word being under 10.5 letters before the bee so that worked out pretty well

I think I would have taken the over. Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure this is the first year in a while that the winning word's been under 11

I was getting +110, the over was a -130 favorite -- thought I'd take a shot for entertainment's sake
