After reading a lot of these, most of which I have heard thousands of times from others, I finally decided to chime in..........

Like any player, I have taken my share of bad beats. And, like any player I have heard my share of bad beat stories. In fact, so many that I often stop someone when they begin one. They usually begin something like: "You wont believe this one....." At which point I generally stop whomever is telling me with, "I will listen to your bad beat story if you guarantee me it's something I have never heard"

At this point one of two things happens: either they turn and walk away; or they regale me with a story I have heard a million times.

With that in mind, on to my story:

This in fact is not one hand but 2. They are 2 of the most unusual beats I have ever taken. Neither were particularly bad, just unusual.

I wont bore you with the intimate details, just the meat.

The first was at a small casino with about 8 poker tables. I was involved in a hand and was heads up with another player.

I had a pretty good read on this player an was positive that the only card which could beat me on the river was a 7. So, sure enough, the deal burns and turns and my heart drops as a 7 hits the river.

But.... before any action is taken, the dealer exclaims: "Wait!" He calls a floorman over. Listening intently, I hear him explain that he mistakenly turned the SECOND card from the deck as somehow it slipped out from beneath the top (river) card.

He explains that he is sure of it.

Convinced, the floorman instructs the dealer to burn the evil 7 and turn the correct card.

The dealer does and puts the correct card up.

Which is of course, is another 7.

This is how I managed to get rivered TWICE! - in the same hand.

As for my second unusual beat, I was playing in 10/20 holdem game in Toronto. I had raised under the gun with A-K of clubs and flopped a 4-flush. I bet out and received one caller. After a brick hit the turn I bet out again and was called.

I again missed on the river, but the board wasn't exactly scary so I decided to take one last shot at this pot and bet out again.

My opponent sighed, nodded his head a couple times, took his marker off his cards then picked them up and tapped them twice on the table.

He had just begun to make a motion to toss them into the muck when from behind him comes a voice: "your coffee, Sir."

He turns and smiles and takes his coffee, then quickly turns back to the table.

Suddenly remembering, he again turns back to the waitress and says, "oh, this is for you", and gives her a tip.

Finally turning back to the table with a confused look on his face, he says to the dealer, "Who's in?" - but before the dealer answers he shakes his head once more and says "I call" and tosses $20 into the pot.

And promptly turns over pocket 2's.

I leaned back in my chair for a brief second, wondering what just happened.

Finally, after weighing the factors, I came to the conclusion that I had just lost a hand because of a WAITRESS.

Those are just a couple of my unique beats, I could tell you more but those stick out in my mind more than any.

Just remember, if you bump into me in a cardroom somewhere, and feel compelled to tell me your beat, make sure it's something I have never heard.

Ok - I hadn't heard of those two before.

But I refuse to read any more....

Until the next time I'm bored...

very interesting beats, I like the double river loss story.

I think waitresses should be made to wait until the hand is over.

She signalled to him in the inflection of her voice "your coffee sir" was her way of saying ... call him, he has sh!t

That's why she got triple the tip she usually gets.

just kidding, nice post though

I had a long chat with the waitress afterwards, I was quite polite and explained why she shouldnt bother players in a hand. She appeared to feel terrible when she realized she had cost me close to $300.

Unfortunately, these were the Charity casino days in Toronto - the casino's moved every 3 days and the waitresses were not familiar with how to deal with poker players etc.

However, to her credit, the next time she served someone a drink she stood quietly behind him until the hand was over.

Good stories, bad luck. That double river beat has me shaking my head. There are times I feel so beat down that it's something that would happen to me. But I rarely play live, so...
“We had all the momentum. We were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look west, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark, that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.” —Raoul Duke, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
