Lol, this is the best reason I've seen for being a vegetarian.

I could never do it---the body needs protein and without meat, your protein options are extremely limited. If people are concerned about the treatment of animals, chemicals, etc.--there ARE ways to purchase organic, grass-fed, antibiotic/hormone free, humanely treated meat. I've recently decided to make the switch--no more purchases of meat from the supermarket--i get it all shipped to me.Besides, without meat, March 14 would just suck.

Does anyone think that most species (cow, chicken, pig) that we domesticate to eventually eat (or use for milk) would be extinct by now, say if we had given it up and released them all in 1850? The idea won't justify domestication if you're against it; just a thought I had.

I stole this from another thread. I think it's relevant. Anyone who's considering vegetarianism must realize that they'd be turning their backs on the ecstasy that is the hamdog:"The Hamdog." The dish, a specialty of Mulligan's, a suburban bar in Atlanta, is a hot dog wrapped by a beef patty that's deep fried, covered with chili, cheese and onions and served on a hoagie bun. Oh yeah, it's also topped with a fried egg and two fistfuls of fries. "If you choke that down [a Hamdog], you might as well find a heart surgeon because you are going to need one."-Dr. Nicholas Lang, Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System

ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? You obviously haven't ever purchased grass fed organic meat. It is FAAAR better tasting meat than i've ever had before. Expensive--yeah--but it is certainly worth it.And i can't believe you guys didn't catch the best pun i've thought of in months:
Besides, without meat, March 14 would just suck.

If I had the will power, I'd be a vegetarian. As of now, I try to only eat organic meat and I never eat unnecessarily cruel meats such as veal or foie gras (not that I could afford it anyway). The best arguments against vegetarianism are the health concerns, I think. From what I've observed, there are some people who do really well without any meat in their diets and there are some that require meat to be healthy. I guess it all differs from body to body. My support of vegetarianism is based on the issue of cruelty to animals. Animals that are kept in mass captivity lead cruel lives and die horrible deaths. I'd be better with the whole situation if animals were allowed to freely graze and given enough space to live. But then again I’m a pretty big hypocrite about the whole issue. Well, I guess it’s better to admit that I’m a hypocrite than to pretend that I’m not.

Since we're talking about it. What is the theory behind or reason to be a vegetarian?
People of course have various reasons. Some reasons as Yorke pointed out are that the meat we generally eat is pumped full of all kinds of crap and the animals are treated so poorly. Organic meat is by far the better choice Other reasons are its a lot more healthier for you as its usually a diet that isnt near as high in fat

For every animal you don't eat, I'll eat 3.
I hope your not trying to claim that as your own!!!
there is no reason to be a vegetarian, other than to inconvenience everyone maybe?

For those of you that dont eat meat try the Plaza's buffet....I'll swear the ribs and chicken fried steak didnt originate from animalsI still get a kick from the "humanely" killed animal crap...I guess instead of killing them with a .22 rifle or cutting their throats with a rusty butcher knife they are given a choice of a final meal followed by heavy sedation before being "put to sleep"......the real suffering begins when the meat is introduced into the wifes meatloaf

*warning..could be a long postMy reasons for being a vegetarian/vegan are health, ethical and environmental. 30 BILLION animals (including aquatic) are slaughtered each year in the United States alone. Animals are raised in horrendous conditions, not seeing the light of day and crammed into spaces that render them un-movable. In most other situations, were it not a "farm", it would be considered torture and animal cruelty. In the modern Western world, it is unnecessary to eat meat, fish or chicken (or even eggs/dairy). That is, in order to get a healthy, balanced diet, there is no need to eat animal products. It is incredibly easy to get enough protein in a vegetarian/vegan diet - I've done it for 20 years. Contrary to popular belief, there are sources of active vitamin b12 from plants and there are more than enough sources for omega 3 fatty acids. There is no cholesterol in a vegan diet whatsoever. In fact, according to research done by the American Heart Association, cutting down on or even eliminating meat (especially red meat) from your diet significantly decreases your chances of heart attack and heart disease. Cancer risks, including prostate and colon cancer, also decrease significantly with the reduced consumption of meat and dairy.Another side is the environment. 56% of US farmland is devoted to livestock production. 80% of corn and 95% of oats in this country are consumed by animals. If the United States reduced their intake of meat by just 10%, the freed land could produce enough food to adequately feed 100 million people a year. Half of all water consumed in the US is for livestock production. It takes 5000 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef as apposed to 25 gallons for a pound of wheat. Also, just to reassure you guys that not all of us are lunatic hippies, here is just a short list of some well known (some dead) vegetarians/vegans.Albert EinsteinCharles DarwinLeonardo Da VinciPythagorasRalph Waldo EmersonHenry David ThoreauGeorge Bernard ShawAll four BeatlesCarl LewisDaniel Negreanu :club: Bill Pearl (4 time Mr. Universe)Bob Dylan........Oh yea, this might be a silly question, but what does "FYP" mean? Seen it used a few times and can't figure it out.

Hahaha. ****ing plants.I was a vegetarian for the last maybe 5 years (I never really ate a ton of meat before that though), and switched to veganism about 6 months ago. It has nothign to do with the animals either. It's more of a health thing.
