21 players left in a $20 180 SNG on PS (18 pay). I was sitting around the middle of the pack. The big stack at the table has shown down some marginal hands. What was my mistake with the following hand (I think I should have bet at least the pot after the flop)?

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t600 (8 handed) FTR converter on zerodivide.cx

MP1 (t16976)
MP2 (t3350)
CO (t31574)
Button (t4725)
SB (t11915)
Hero (t12198)
UTG (t26037)
UTG+1 (t3530)

Preflop: Hero is BB with A:diamond:, K:diamond:.
4 folds, CO calls t600, 2 folds, Hero raises to t2400, CO calls t1800.

Flop: (t5150) 4:diamond:, T:heart:, 2:heart: (2 players)
Hero bets t2500, CO calls t2500.

Turn: (t10150) 7:heart: (2 players)
Hero checks, CO checks.

River: (t10150) 6:heart: (2 players)
Hero bets t2000, CO raises to t4000, Hero folds.

Final Pot: t16150

Results:
CO shows [5s Ah] (a flush, Ace high)
Outcome: CO wins t16150.

I don't know if you could have gotten him off of this hand. He was second in chips, nearing the bubble. He had gut shot straight draw and back-door flush draw. Betting the pot on the flop seems like an overbet, but maybe he would lay it down.

I'm not much of a NL guy, so i don't know.

Good luck.

Don't show the results as it skews the analysis.

I would have shut down after the 3rd heart fell on the turn - Villain is playing it as if he could be on a flush draw which just got there. All you have is A-high and his check on the turn could be to induce a bluff on the river.

I hate AK when it misses and I've raised it out of the blinds. Especially when the other guy has me covered... I may only be raising to 3x instead of 4x as well, since I don't think he's folding to a larger raise based on your reads and his stack. I think I bet 3200 or so on the flop (If I 4xed it preflop). When he calls, I check/fold UI on the turn. I'm not sure what I do on the river, Your bet could be good if he folds something like 88, 77, 66 or 55 (no heart). The thing is, that's about all you can put him on that he would fold. If he had hit the 10 on the flop I think he's raising. So it looks more like a smaller pocket pair or a draw, which woulda got there. So maybe the river should also go check/fold. I just don't like making a move at this point against a stack that can bust you, which is part of the reason I'm only raising 3x BB preflop instead of 4, I really don't want to commit myself out of position if I miss.

I dont think you need to push this hand so hard pre-flop. Youre out of position, with a very large stack limping. That's quite often a small pair, and you dont want to invest a lot of chips on a hand you may have to fold on the flop.

Then you miss the flop and lead, with a board that is nonscary to a middle pair. It feels like you are trying too hard to make things happen, when in this chip position you can afford to be patient.

I must be misreading this.

You are still in the tourney?
180 players?
You bet off 1/2 your stack with AK...4500 of it post flop...into the big stack, no less.
And you are still in the tourney?

That close to the bubble..I hate your play.

All I can add is that I would only attempt the raise OOP if I was facing a smaller stack. A lot of big stack players feel the obligation to call your bet with position and that just leads you to big trouble as you can see for yourself.

There was no point in betting the river as you showed your weakness already and the big stack is going to call you with feeble holdings, it just so happens here that hee has the goods.

This close to the bubble I would either push or limp pre-flop and shut down when the flop misses me. With an M of 12 or so, OOP, and whats probably a slightly below average stack you dont want to be committing chips on 2 or 3 streets that are going to put you in even worse position. Since he just limped and he doesnt have that much cushion above 2d place I would push.
