A Great Fold Creates The Downfall

First off I say great fold but it may not have been that great. I just say that because i think it saved my tourney life at that point Live tournament. 40 buy in. 100 people. Top 10 paid. We started with 10k in chips. Very early in the tourney, Stage 2. Blinds 100-200. I'm down to about 6k because I called an all in short stacked on the flop of K 6 4 with top pair. Guy shows 66. A little later, UTG raises to 400, only double the BB. Everyone fols to me, I'm in Mid position, and I raise 1000 to 1400 total with KQ suited, but suit doesn't matter for the hand. This guy didn't really know how to play UTG and I knew he would fold. The BB calls the rais and UTG folds. The flop comes 2 2 Q. BB bets out 500, I raise him 1500, 2000 total. He re-raises me 2000 for 4000 total. I am really pissed because why would he call a raise preflop with a 2 in his hands. The fact that he is in the BB might have to do something with it but he seemed a tight player since we started the tourney. My options here are Fold or All-in. Can't call and see an Ace on the turn in case he has Ax. He could've been slowplaying AA or KK, and a 2 had me beat. Even AQ. So I laid it down. Now I'm down to 3100 chips and Catch nothing until the next level. Next level 200-400, I'm in the BB and catch 7 9 off. I check and up against only one player. Flop is K 10 8, I go all in for 2700, guy calls and flips over K 10. No Jack no 6 and I'm out. All that time I was thinking If I called I would've doubled up and not be in as much trouble with the higher blinds than if I folded. Anyways If you guys see anything wrong In my plays, I'll always learn from comments. Also, does it happen to you guys when you make a fold you think is the good one but nothing goes right after that point? Do you ever feel that you should've gone all in there even though you had a feeling you were beat, instead of getting blinded out later? Thanks guys

with about 6K left, you put 2900 in the pot before you folded.seems like you folded when you had invested about half your stack in the pot. in a tournament, if you're going to put half your chips into a pot, you should usually be prepared to take the hand all the way.

I know that would've been the logical thing to do, but with this tight player, I know I would've been out. Oh well.. next time maybe.

What makes you think Im going to let you play? I just want your $$. :)Actually HU is already included in the above exceptions since you are always in late position or SB.

I disagree vehemently with this. KQ's not a good hand to call a raise with, but you can't wait for a big pair to steal the blinds when you're three off the button, let alone in the CO. If you don't take chances, you're not going to win any tournaments.

Its a good thing that Coper is a newb and never wins tournaments.I agree that I'll raise with it more often than he's suggesting, but it can also get you into a lot trouble.

I know Copernicus is a solid player and I respect his contribution to the forum, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have any leaks in his tournament game. If I disagree with the content of someone's post, I'm going to voice my opinion regardless of their post count. I'm a pretty solid tournament player myself and I think I can differentiate between good and bad advice.

Live or late in an online tourney with good players left I agree. Early on in an online tourney you dont need to steal, and since Ax is played so often, even to raises, KQ is not the hand to do it with. Also, playing KQ for a steal, folding to any resistance, isnt going to get you into much trouble, but if you play it beyond the flop in a contested hand, you are going to leak chips more than youre going to pick them up.I think its TJ Cloutier who hates KQ as much as I do.
