I wanted to bring up a particular hand from the WPT final table last night. A piece of strategy that I use in my short-handed NL tourney game was used successfully. I brought up the type of play on this forum before and got chastized for it. I want to call this play out, as an example, as it worked successfully for Lee Watkinson.I believe there were three people left. Gabe Kaplan on the short stack, Eli Elezra with the chiplead and Watkinson somewhere close behind Elezra.Kaplan was first to act with (I believe) QJ. He bumped the pot up to around 220,000. (Sorry I don't know what the blinds were at this time). Elezra, the chipleader, simply CALLED this raise behind him with A8, failing to realize he's got Watkinson yet to act. Watkinson read this and moved all in for about 2.5 million with Q8. This can be a great move when someone in front of you simply calls a raise. Now action is on Kaplan, who, due to position must fold. (Because of the call and re-raise behind him.). So he folds. Now it's on Elezra with A8. He's got to assume Watkinson is playing A-9 or better, if not a pocket pair, and so Elezra gets out of harms way, and folds. Watkinson steals about 500,000 on a great situational bluff. This was obviously the ballsiest move of the telecast. Q8 is very risky here, but even if he's got 27, he can play this similarly. With that said, I love how Elezra limped in with an ace about three times, disguising the fact that he hit top pair when the flop brought an ace. This is another play I love to do when it's heads up. Disguise those aces! But by far, Watkinson's move was the ballsiest.Poor Scotty Nguyen... talk about getting steamrolled. And wtf was Juanda thinking when he moved all in with a naked ace? Come on John, you're better than that! He wasn't that short-stacked yet.

Did you watch the show? Go re-watch the show and tell me you don't feel bad for Scotty. (besides the first call he made against someones all-in. that was bad.)Scotty ran into an amazing amount of bad luck. He entered as the chipleader and left in 4th, or 5th? I did feel bad for the guy. Juanda doesn't need sympathy from me. I rank him as one of the top 3 nl holdem players in the world over the past 1.5 years. You are absurd to imply that I "favor" scotty over John. What kind of 6th grade argument is that anyway? John made a bluff (I don't recall his exact hand but it was garbage) in that telecast that I admitted to myself that I could never do at this stage in my game. At least not right now. He is years ahead of me as a player. Duh...

I don't think Juanda's play was all that bad. He had been able to push people off hands most of the night it seemed. It was also a tough call for Lee to make with fives. It was also a suited ace so John had at least a couple of ways to win the hand
Wine Notes for those that care about such pretentious things

Yeah, Scotty ran into Lee's (I think it was him), bizarre all in with AK.All in on a blind only hand. It's straight out of online tournaments. Now, granted, most of us probably would fold AQ, because we play online. Scotty is one of the best tourney players in recent history, but isn't used to an online-type move. I do feel bad for him.

I rank Juanda as far superior to Hellmuth. Give Hellmuth the personality of Barry Greenstein (Sorry B-DOG) at the table and nobody would ever talk about him. Please try to overlook the glitz and glamour of PH. JJ is stronger IMHO. It would take a lot more luck for me to beat JJ, than it would PH.

So I guess you rank everyone on this site as the same skill level, so long as you haven't played against them? That's weird. You should be able to tell from watching them both that Juanda (at least over the last 2 years) is far better than Phil-ly boy.
