Another pocket pair with an overcard on the flop where I don't know what on earth I am doing throughout the hand. Questions like should I be in check down mode on the turn are going through my head, among others.

I hate when they donk into you like this.
You have to think to yourself, what could the SB be leading out with here? I've never managed to come up with an answer to that.
I like the way you played it. But I could be wrong. I really can't think of what the SB leads out that isn't a K. There's no flush draw, the only straight draw is 78, so I don't know.

SB could have something like 89s
You played it fine.
Some would say bet river, but this is a weak King often too.

So, lets say I get bet into on the turn from SB, (and for the sake of argument that UTG +1 folds), then can I fold? Or is the pot big enough that I should be calling down? Or maybe raising on the turn to try to get to a showdown? I would lean towards folding, as this gives me every indication of a king, but perhaps I am being too weak here.

I would NEVER raise this turn.
I'm probably folding to a donk bet too.

Raising the turn would be horrible. If you want to see showdown - call/call. Otherwise fold. Without reads I'd say fold is probably best but more often than not I call/call.
Hand was played as well as possible. I'm with Zach - what will SB lead this flop with other than a K. Once he calls the turn I'm pretty darn sure of it so checking behind on the river is great.

I'm trying to square in my mind how calling flop but not betting river can both be correct?
Well, one thing, is leading the flop is odd for SB with a K.
A c/r makes more sense
Villans don't make much sense.
and then I've answered my question.
a river bet makes sense, given SB never 3-bet or c/r'd flop.
Does he call with more hands that have a K or not?
I dont know.
no reads.

A lot of villains never c/r. A9 or A6 could possibly play it like this. As could a weak K. Or KQ in the hands of a passive player.
The fact that the river brings the bd flush and an "overcard" to someone playing A9 I think means that we'll get a lot more calls froma K than from something we beat.
