Congrats To Barry Greenstein

Recommended Posts

After watching him get sucked out on High Stakes Poker, it's nice to see him win the WPT L.A. Poker Classic Invitational. :club:
Too bad 200 grand is much less than what he normally handles....but a win is a win.....Barry pwns!

Also, you haven't seen him too much in the tournament scene lately by the way of success. Of course, that's explainable by the cash games. But honestly, he is one of the top players no matter what he plays it seems.

Eh, I have no love for Barry and it doesn't matter much to me that he wins. The charity thing doesn't do it for me either. If I work hard for a million plus, i'm gonna keep that shizznit!Maybe I'm a bad person... who knows. But liquor=yum.

Here's my thoughts on why he does that:1) He does it because he's realized he has more money now than he could ever need to live off of, and decided to use his talents to make a difference in the world (the reason he says he does it for on TV)2) He does it for a huge tax write-off so he has to pay little or no taxes on cash game winnings/book sales (which we know he doesn't donate)I don't know the reasons for why he gives the money, but at least someone is.But it's absolutely undeniable his talent.

Barry explains in Ace on the River that he receives no tax deductions for his donations.

Greenstein's donations are tax-deductable. But there is a cap of 25% of income for charitable donations that can be written off. From Ace on the River, page 29:"I have seen posts on the Internet insinuating I am doing this for a tax deduction, as if this were an old car whose value I was overstating. Maybe these people don't realize that I have to declare tournament winnings as income before I start making deductions. Actually, the government allows only 25% of one's income to be declared as charity. Consequently, if I don't make any other money, I have to pay taxes on 75% of the tournament winnings even though I have given that money away. I hope to be able to make enough money in the side games so I can deduct all that I give away, but my increased participation in tournaments has limited my side-game play. It is likely that I will have to cut back on my charitable contributions in the future. Otherwise, I will not be able to afford the taxes."BG is a great guy and should be commended for his charitable works. His generosity sets a gold standard for other well-off poker players to emulate should they choose to.
