Flop: (5 SB) 8:club:, 9:heart:, A:heart: (5 players)

Turn: (5 BB) 8:spade: (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP1 bets, bobbywithanI calls, MP 3 calls, SB calls, BB calls.

River: (10 BB) 5:diamond: (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP1 betsbobbywithanI?

Since I simply called the turn, is a river call good too, to attempt to get 3 extra bets in there, or is raising good to ensure 1 more? I'm really trying to learn to attemt to get overcalls when I have a monster.

I think it depends on how likely MP1 is to put in a bunch more bets if you've still got him beat. He seemed to want to take the lead on the turn, but might not be willing to go crazy with whatever he has on the river.

On the flip side, the players behind you may be totally willing to call two on the river since the pot has some substance to it. Small stakes players don't like to think about the ramifications of an overcall very often, and will even call a raise on the river with just a weak ace in that spot (in my experience).

While it very much depends, I think I personally take a chance on a raise in a game where people call too much.
