I didn't want to hijack another thread, so I'm starting another one to discuss online poker, and effective ways to use the the chat feature do affect your opponents.Ways such as:1. Baiting them2. Pushing them over the edge after a bad beat3. Congratulating them after a stupid, but successful play4. Establishing an image (nice guy, villain, fish)Anyone else have tips on how to 'play an angle'?Daniel?Dev

I mostly try to fly under the radar, and let stuff happen around me I play mostly low-limit online, so in general I dont think any of that is necessary.Rog

Many people play that style - but I prefer to use all the weapons at my disposal. I know Daniel likes to chat it up with opponents at a table, and learn all kinds of things off the reads he gets from their answers. Also, Daniel has often used techniques to force people to fold when they had the superior hand. So aren't you limiting yourself to 'playing the cards' instead of playing the players?Dev

Laugh. By playing online you're "limiting" yourself to largely playing the cards. At least in limit. In NL not so much, but you can't have the same degree of "tells" to go off of, or the same ability to give off false reads to others.I mean poker, online or not, is a hell of a lot more than JUST the cards you're dealt. But I think you're overstating the importance of a few potential tools for online play, shrug. Just my take on it.None of it can HURT you, so if you want to try them out and gain some benefit, go for it. I have all kinds of friends that do the measured pauses in NL tourneys, for a variety of reasons. They try to show that they seriously think about calling in blinds vs steals, and all kinds of other crap. Another big ones they use is when they have a near lock, they think a good while before betting if an overcard comes on the turn/river so it looks like they're scared of the card, and they want the other guy to raise on a bluff or whatnot.The list goes on and on. They swear by it, and some of it probably works a bit. I just can't see bothering for online. To me it mostly only makes sense for NL tourneys for online, and even then I don't bother, but I know a lot of people who do.

Somewhat I guess, but I do pay attention to betting patterns. In the low-limit games I play, I'm not sure how effective reads from the chat box would be. Probably a skill worth developing, especially if I could do it like DN... affect the game without being an anus at the table like some "chatty" pros.

Agreed - its no where near as effective as a RL game, but it is a useful tool. And, Im sure we have all seen someone go on tilt online, and continue for the next few hands lecture the table on how 'the game should be played'. These types of people can be very easily manipulated.So, yes it is more limiting than RL, but it is still effective.Dev

I berated a player for the first time yesterday.I was holding AA. Capped the bet off two other raisers. Flop came and we capped that. Everybody called on the river and this ******* turns over 10 7 offsuit. I had just had a root canal and needed an outlet. Ended up making a full table leave and losing more than I should have. Felt good, but it was stupid.

The quite ones I leave. The fish I congratulate. The trash talker players I try and wind up. Someone re raises them and they fold I say "Caught with your hands in the cookie jar? i think we all know you bluff a bit. " etc... If there an ass I try an be a bigger one. They always seem to start steamin and raising more. Man that was a lousy call. You got real lucky then.With the educated ones I always try act dumb. How did you work out i you had the correct odds and he got lucky.on general though I have a nice friendly image, sometimes tell jokes to get noticed when I'm folding a bit. Never slag a fish off. If someone dishes it out don't be affraid to give some back.
