I do not know if this topic has been covered yet, but i was wondering what kind of techniques anyone uses to over come the feeling of being on tilt. My temper goes off like a shot, and it really affects my game. Any legit help would be greatly appreciated.

Well it's just willpower and realizing that you can be outdrawn and you WANT them to be drawing slim -- I mean it's that in the long run.In the short-run, if you don't have this mindset yet, you usually just need to take a 5-10 min break, or longer if you're seriously out of control.Just take an hour break, read the forum, and then go back and crush them when you're feeling good after reading the forum (or whatever else you did for an hour).

Just curse him in the chat room, punch his avaitor, and smoke a cigarette. If you don't smoke, start.J/KIf you have a proper bankroll, who cares? You'll get it back and then some. If not? Start playing within your bankroll, and you won't care as much.

after a night of crappy poker, sitting down at table and losing twice the standard buyin for the table on the first two hands... tilting is natural. I get up, step outside, yell some curses. Sometimes I'll drive to the store and buy a twinkie or something to smash and grind. The important thing is to step away, I've found. Take a walk. Pet you dog. Tell your woman how much you love her and how much you absolutely hate Poker.Then come back and try again. Don't ever tilt yourself out of not playing, just tilt yourself into taking a breather.

A fine post. But as a side question, how do you lose 2x the standard buyin in 2 hands at a table? It's basically impossible in limit where standard buyin is like 25 BB. In NL you mean you go allin both hands and lose them both? That is kinda rough. Well ok, if you cap every street in limit that's what? 12 BB? So it's almost possible in limit if you cap every single street, but not quite, you'd still have a BB left!

If you're playing online, just quit for awhile. Get something productive done, or just goof off some other way. Since you can easily sign back in once you're in better mental shape, there's no reason to keep playing. Leaving a live game is a little more of a big deal sometimes, so I can't necessarily offer that advice there. I think it's best not to think about poker or set a time limit for when you're coming back. If you think about poker, you could put yourself in worse shape..you might not be cursing anymore but if you're dwelling on the hand, you might still play worse even though it's not obvious that you're on tilt. Also, if you set a time limit, you'll end up getting impatient and jump right back to the table when your time is up, whether that's reasonable or not.

Watching Phil Ivey...It seems like that guy never goes on tilt. You always here the pros say "thats poker". Now if my set gets beat by runner runner for the flush, I want to cry like a biatch, and beat the shit out of him for the bad call.I made the decision a while back, that when playing live to show no emotion. Not when I win...not when I loose. I never give my opponent the satisfaction. Watching Phil and Daniel...they rarely blow up like most players do when they tilt. Its probably because of so many hands played, and w/ that so many beats.When i'm on a bad run....just take a break...see if there is anything i can change, and then go back to work......

This is a tough on. Everyone new hand you have to think of yourself as "even". You havn't lost money, you havn't won money.Only experience will relieve you of tilt. After a while, you see the crap so much it just doesn't bother you anymore.Learn chip tricks and start smoking cigarettes.That's all I can give on this one.

Playing this limit you clearly need to slow down when the 3rd card to a straight hits. Capping it on the turn in my opinion was silly, The raise and capping on the river was even worse In my opinion because you're no longer possibly charging someone to draw. If you're three bet on the river with your hand you're probably beat. It's quite possible that someone's got the other 10 with a bigger kicker too. You just overplayed the hand post flop in my opinion and also shouldnt have seen the flop for a raise.

Well Learning your own Tilt or Steam factor is important... Reading Tao of Poker DOES help, I read that and I think of myself as a tilt-factor of 7.5-8. When you are on tilt you simply need to just breathe... just calm down, remember what you've learned and try to re-establish your frame of mind, if you have to stand up, take a break... go to the bathroom... re-organize your thoughts...It takes time, it takes discipline and it takes a firm understanding of the game to not go on tilt, it really does. Knowing you played a hand correctly or incorrectly will save you from going on Tilt in the future.

If I go on tilt while playing limit, I'll go play a low cost Sit' n Go where that aggression may do me some good. Seems to work for me.
