Shimmering Wang 1
The new incarnation of TheIceman05 needs more mixtape help, but not for a chick this time. My little brother (17, junior in HS) is having a rough year. Girl dropped him(together 2-3 years). He missed a freethrow with no time on the clock to lose a varsity basketball game to an arch rival, and he's just destroyed about it. Other stuff. Most of it typical highschool shit, but we've all been there.Anyway, I'm gonna burn him a "keep your chin up" CD. He's got good taste in music. I'm requesting some help for song suggestions. Keep in mind I want GOOD music. If I see any Blink182 crap-teen-angst suggestions, I'll be ignoring them. The only song I've got on the list so far is "This Year" by the Mountain Goats ("I am gonna make it through this year if it kills me").Give me some help guys. Wang

Shimmering Wang 1
Thanks for trying, eve, but I'm pretty sure most of those songs will just make him more depressed/angry/want to kill himself. I'm not trying to encourage a bout of alcoholism, either (though, for me, those work). Nor do I want him dreaming of his ex's violent death (I'm looking at you Metallica version of a Misfits cover). We're looking more for, "Staying positive in the face of adversity." It can be melancholy, but it's gotta be good, midwestern melancholy, where you know nothing's gonna keep you down for long and you're going to make it no matter what. Oh yes, I went there. The emboldened tracks were already under very very very heavy consideration. Getting an "I second" means they'll probably make the list. I've got a good week to work on this. There are a few songs you've suggested I've never heard (For some reason, I've got a weird pathological thing where I refuse to listen to Widespread Panic... never even heard a single song), but I'll give them a listen. And I can't believe you went there...Also, eve, which sublime song would be your pick? It's hard to make a feelgood mix w/o sublime, but I'm not totally sure which song to pick. DrawingDeadInDM 0
I'd say, Fix Me Now, by Garbage, but, that's probably a little too, eh..goth, per se? Depends on how broken up he is, really.Hmm..Counting the Days, by Goldfinger, if he digs Ska at all. I still wish someone would've played The General by Dispatch for me when I was going through the same things, but, I digress. It's hard sayin..I know, not much help..blah. mk 11
I immediately thought, "this kid need somes flippin' Polyphonic Spree up in his piece," but the always stellar mbreon beat me to the punch. I still think "It's the Sun" would be a good opener.Others (all snobbery aside):1.) Rod Stewart - "Maggie May", that song always puts me in a good mood no matter how crappy life can be at times.2.) The Mamas and the Papas - "Go Where You Wanna Go", again, impossible to be in a bad mood after hearing this song.3.) Sly & the Family Stone - "Thank You (Falettin Me Be Myself Again)"4.) Jim O'Rourke - "Therefore, I Am"5.) My Bloody Valentine - "Blown a Wish"6.) Supergrass - "Seen the Light"7.) Primal Scream - "Kill All Hippies", hopefully his ex is a hippie.8.) Fiona Apple - "Window" or "Not About Love" or "Extraordinary Machine", Jon Brion versions, off her new one, great "fuck you" break up songs.9.) Gloria Gaynor - "I WIll Survive", somebody had to say it. The Cake cover isn't bad.
