This hand happened the other night, it has been bugging me since, so i want some peoples opinions.$20 sng on PP. 3 people left.I was on button with J :club: 10 :) . I had 3500.Villain was in BB. She had 3900Blinds 50/100.UTG folds.I raise to 250.SB folds.BB calls.Pot is 650.Flop: 8 :club: 9 :D Q :club: BB checks.I bet 300.BB calls. Pot is 1250.Turn 3 :club: I bet 600.BB calls. Pot is 2450.River A :club: I bet 1000.BB raises all-in.I has 1350 more to call all-in. And I was terrified that she called down with two clubs and made a flush. I folded, and she showed her 6 :D 3 :) bluff. While I know I shouldn't have laid down here, I had the feeling, the way that she came back when that club fell on the river, that she made her flush, I was wrong. I know that when you flop the straight, it's like heaven when they call your bets down and go all in on the river. I told my buddy about the hand without telling him the outcome and he said that it was probably some fish who called down with a pair and made aces up on the river. Anyway, it turns out I was the fish, but the fish who lived to swim another day and ended up getting second in the tournament, instead of having an overwhelming chip lead. Any comments would be appreciated.James

Bet more on the turn. You don't mind taking it down there, and anyway it's a greater charge if they still want to draw.

Well, I'm not laying it down there as it seems to me that the chances that they actually have two clubs and called on the flop are pretty small. On the other hand, you trusted your instincts, which I think in the long run will serve you pretty well, even if they were off this time.I actually like the size of your bets on the flop and the turn - you have the nuts and want them to keep calling. On the turn, you still have the nuts, and you're still giving them the wrong odds to call with a flush draw. Betting more is the 'safer' play, but when you know that you have an advantage like this, you have to play it to extract maximum value. Betting half the pot is perfect - it maximises the likelihood that your opponent will make a mistake by calling.I'm not so sure about the river bet: did you bet a 1000 as a value bet or as a defensive bet? I think I'd actually prefer a check on the river - if villain goes all in, you can be pretty sure that he doesn't have it as he'd probably try to value bet it (that's not certain, but I think pretty likely). If he makes a smaller bet of, say, 1k, you can call and then you've only invested a thousand, whereas if you lead out with that you might have to put more in the pot. Or he could check. By betting 1k, you're getting pot committed, so you might as well bet it all if you're going to bet anything, thus taking away the possibility that they can bluff you out of the pot.

I agree with you on the check/fold river. I was trying to make a defensive bet. This comes back to the thread I saw in General the other day as to whether you should check/fold if you have no intention to call a raise and bet only if you think you have the best hand and will call a raise.

i pay off the flush here every time. if he stayed in with 2 clubs on that flop and caught, good for him. i'd say most of the time, you have him beat here, and should call for this monster pot.

It seems to me if she is playing 63 suited there must have been some prior hands to let you know she can have any two cards. The probability of either opponent having 2 clubs is under 10%, and when the rainbow flop comes I cant see ducking a runner runner flush. She did a nice job of setting you up for a bluff, if you had a weakish hand like middle pair or even TPTK. With the nut straight you have to call.
