this hand bugged me...should it have?

Very early in a session today. I've played with Seat 2 and 7 before - both are mediocre players at best IMO, taking their draws too far. No reads on Seat 5.Stage #237049642: Seven Card Hi/Lo Normal $1/$2 - 2005-11-30 16:10:02 (ET)Seat 1 - PILLOWFROG ($41.20 in chips)Seat 2 - RLEW ($50.67 in chips)Seat 3 - ROCKETWAD ($27.90 in chips)Seat 4 - VCR1 ($44.04 in chips)Seat 5 - ROLLINRAVE24 ($12.31 in chips)Seat 6 - TREYSSUITED ($20 in chips)Seat 7 - WBONNEY ($14.37 in chips)PILLOWFROG - Ante $0.10RLEW - Ante $0.10ROCKETWAD - Ante $0.10VCR1 - Ante $0.10TREYSSUITED - Ante $0.10WBONNEY - Ante $0.10ROLLINRAVE24 - Ante $0.10*** 3rd STREET ***PILLOWFROG - Pocket [H H 8s] RLEW - Pocket [H H Ks] ROCKETWAD - Pocket [7d 4s 2c] VCR1 - Pocket [H H 10h] ROLLINRAVE24 - Pocket [H H 2d] TREYSSUITED - Pocket [H H 4d] WBONNEY - Pocket [H H 6s] ROCKETWAD - Bring-In $0.50VCR1 - FoldsROLLINRAVE24 - Calls $0.50TREYSSUITED - FoldsWBONNEY - Calls $0.50PILLOWFROG - Calls $0.50RLEW - FoldsMy third bring-in in a row. *** 4TH STREET ***PILLOWFROG - Pocket [H H 8s Jd] ROCKETWAD - Pocket [7d 4s 2c 7s] ROLLINRAVE24 - Pocket [H H 2d 7h] WBONNEY - Pocket [H H 6s Qh] WBONNEY - ChecksPILLOWFROG - ChecksROCKETWAD - Bets $1ROLLINRAVE24 - Calls $1WBONNEY - FoldsPILLOWFROG - FoldsI bet out on 4th here to hopefully get it heads-up, which it did.*** 5TH STREET ***ROCKETWAD - Pocket [7d 4s 2c 7s 6d] ROLLINRAVE24 - Pocket [H H 2d 7h 7c] ROLLINRAVE24 - ChecksROCKETWAD - Bets $2ROLLINRAVE24 - Calls $2This is where I was unsure of what to do. We both have a pair of 7's, and I have 4 to a low. I bet to see where I was in the hand - if he folded, great;if he raised, he has at least two pair; if he calls, he is drawing to the low.*** 6TH STREET ***ROCKETWAD - Pocket [7d 4s 2c 7s 6d 9d] ROLLINRAVE24 - Pocket [H H 2d 7h 7c Ac] ROLLINRAVE24 - Bets $2ROCKETWAD - Calls $2I missed my low again, he hit another low card, and it was the ace to boot, meaning my pair of 7's will definately not be the best hand UI. Still, have to call right? Raise won't get him to fold, and folding is way to tight IMO.*** RIVER ***ROCKETWAD - Pocket [7d 4s 2c 7s 6d 9d 10c] ROLLINRAVE24 - Pocket [H H 2d 7h 7c Ac H] ROLLINRAVE24 - Bets $2ROCKETWAD - FoldsROLLINRAVE24 - returned ($2) : not calledMissed completely, both ways. Seems like a waste right after, but looking back, I think I played it correctly.Comments anyone? :?

I don't like the bet on 5th. Just take the free card. There's not much value in betting, and he's almost certainly not going to fold. If you check 5th, then 6th is an easy fold when he catches the ace. After you bet 5th, the pot odds may dictate a call on 6th, but it is close in my opinion.

I think I needed that bet on fifth, to try to get some information out of him, which I did (as he didn't raise or fold). Also, I don't want to give him a "free" card that could help him to scoop me (I had a fairly good two way hand, but nothing stellar). On 6th street, when he caught the ace, I agree that I would have folded had I not bet 5th, as there wasn't a card in the deck that would allow me to scoop by the looks of things. 8)

The problem is that on 5th there's no way you can be ahead and there's (probably) no way he's going to fold. All the information you need is there in front of you: you're either a toss-up or you're behind (if he has 2-pair, or an ace in the hole). So in the long run, betting is just throwing money away.
