highsociety 0 Posted November 30, 2005 Share Posted November 30, 2005 Hey Guys, Ok lately I have been trying to work on my limit game as I am mostly a NL player. In a $4/$8 game yesterday I was dealt 10-8 offsuit in the SB and 4 players limped, so I called and the BB checked. The flop came 10-8-3 rainbow, and I checked. It was checked round to the button who bet $4 and I simply called because I was looking to pump it on 4th Street when the bigger bets come and I didn't feel like this was a bad play since the board was rainbow, although a hand like 9-7 or J-9 would have a straight draw. Anyways the UTG player called as well and a 9 of clubs hit 4th street putting 2 clubs on board. I checked again, UTG checked and the button bet $8 as I was 100% sure he would and I raised it to $16. UTG thinks then calls and so does the button. The river is a Q of spades, so the a board of 10-8-3-9-Q, I check, UTG bets $8, button folds and I call. UTG shows J-2 offsuit for a Q high straight. Now my question is did I miss a bet by not raising the button on the flop? Or was my thinking correct to raise in the bigger rounds to attract as much money into the pot? I thought the played who had J-2 made a poor call by calling a bet on the flop with Jack high, then calling two big bets cold on the turn. With a rainbow flop this seems like as good a time as any to wait to raise with top 2.Sucks that the guy sucked out but you played the hand fine.Note: The player with J2 flopped bottom pair. TJ_Eckleburg 0 Posted November 30, 2005 Share Posted November 30, 2005 I think heavy action on the flop is better than waiting for the turn to raise.I think bet/3-bet or check/raise would both be better than check/call.I want to take the lead on the flop and come out shooting on the turn, for our position here.I don't like giving free or discount cards to a field with two pair, especially OOP. You might even get raised by J 10 or A 10 or something. Top 2 has lots of ways to be counterfeited. By check calling you gave the guy reason to call with his one over and runner runner straight draw. not a good reason, but a reason. The other players want to give you their money. I think I recounted the flop incorrectly, it must have been a 3 that came down, not a 2 because he definetly didn't have a pair from what I recall. So I edited my post to show a 3, but either way I don't think it matters too much even if he did have bottom pair on the flop. I usually like to do that with top pair/bottom pair, and bottom 2 pair because I agree with you, there is a lot of ways those hands can be counterfeitted. Again thanks for the responses. quadaces 0 Posted December 1, 2005 Share Posted December 1, 2005 You've got to bet this flop! It is too coordinated with the 10 8. There are too many cards for people to draw to for you to worry about gettin fancy. A flop bet takes down that pot. Link to post Share on other sites

Your concern is protecting a very vulnerable hand, and making the field call 2-cold with rags. They suck. Let them suck more.
