Let me first start by qualifing myself so no one thinks I'm an idiot. I've been playing competitive/tournament poker for about 2 years now. I run my own poker league + play in anothers, etc. I've read both Harrington books, some by Sklansky, and Super System. Looking FWD to Daniel's. I'd classify myself as a solid-aggressive player. All in all I feel I have a good idea about whats going in No-Limit Texas Hold'em. So please help because I'm at a loss currently on how to handle this situation again in the future.55 man poker leagueabout 1 hour inblinds are current 2-4I'm somewhat sort stacked already about 70-ish (start 110)I'm 1 off the button for positionI have 4 limpers ahead of meI look down and have pocket 4'sI flat call (sure I could've raised, but I wanted to flop tripps and get action, if not I throw my hand away on the flop)Flop comes 4-10-10 rainbow (I currently have a full house).Checked around to me, pot is 20 totalI bet 20, giving 2-1 on the $, 3 players foldLast player re-raises to 40 all-day, I put him on tripp 10'sI re-raise all-in, he thinks about about and then callsShows down 10-J suitedTurn blankRiver J giving him a better full houseNormally, getting riverd wouldn't bother me, thats poker. But this same scenario happened earlier in the week to me, losing to a better house on the river, just different cards. Now I'm thinkng I must be doing something fundamentally wrong.Does anyone know the odds on higher tripps improving to full house i.e. my 4's full of 10's will lose to 10's full of 4's 1 out of every three times?Should you simply go all-in when you have the lower full house, eventhough you'll be scarificing action just to avoid the river beat. Or do you actually throw away the full house? Did I just type that?Love to hear thoughts on how to play these "small" full houses versus tripps that can improve to beat you. Thank you.Jason

Welcome to the forum. We're glad to have you here.Poker's about making correct decisions that LEAD TO results (money). It's not about just results. You played the hand beautifully.Generally speaking, you WANT to be playing small full houses (under fulls) fast... especially concealed boats. You want to get someone caught slowplaying flopped trips, and you want the money to go in when you're way ahead and he's drawing to 4 outs. That's exactly what happened, and it sucks he caught.
Always bet like you've got a pair.

He has three outs to hit his other pocket card, plus a running pair on the board. The 3 outs give him about a 12% chance and running pairs something like 6%. (the turn can be any of 45 cards except the case 4, the case T and 3 cards that match his other pocket, since they are counted above, so that results in 39/45 *3/44 = 6%.An all-in could drive out trips with a bad kicker, which is the one hand thats going to pay you off big. Keep your bets in the 3/4-1x pot range and hes got bad drawing odds and doesnt know it.

I might bet a little less here, but I think you played it well and got unlucky. Definitely push once he reraises.

Don't be results oriented. You played it correctly. Do not even think about raising that preflop.Go to http://www.twodimes.net if you want to check out odds.
