Live tournament yesterday. I get crippled right before I make it to the final table (my Queens get taken down by A/J). Anyways I double through on the second hand to 11,000 in chips. The blinds are 1500-3000. I am two off the button and I pick up A/K clubs. The chip leader (90,000) two to my right who was really passive calls the blind. Guy on my right folds and then I go all in. The button (13,500) deliberates for about two minutes before calling, then the SB calls (45,000), BB folds and the chip leader folds. Flop comes 9,8,3 rainbow (no club), button bets his last 2,500 and the SB calls. The SB had A/Q off suit, the chip leader said he had A/3 diamonds and the button had 88 for trips and I was drawing dead. Now at the time I feel like I didn't give enough consideration to the players behind me when I went all in. With the amount of chips I had I couldn't get anyone to fold a reasonable hand, although I think the button leaving himself with 2,500 in chips after calling with 88 was a bad play considering he was probably dominated or at best a coin flip. So I think I should have called, and if absolutely necessary I could have gotten off the hand after the flop and left myself with 8,000.Now, 9th place paid $150 (which is what I got) and 8th went up to $290 and first was $1,565. Now I always play for first, but an extra $140 wouldn't have been too bad as UTG would have been all in by posting the BB and SB the next two hands.Comments appreciated.

I think that's really the only way you can play that hand since you said you were playing for first and not to just squeeze by into another place by waiting for that guy to get blinded out. You've got a very good starting hand and you are short-stacked so your only play is to go all-in here. I really think calling would be a very bad play. You would only be giving people with marginal hands a chance to hit the flop. If you had only called and that guy had hit his trip 8's on the flop, you'd have been kicking yourself for not pushing all-in and maybe getting him to lay it down.
