Hey mods.... give me a little while in general with this one, I'm having some issues.Here's the problem....I was trying to download torrents... which I haven't really done before, but I was giving it a shot, got a program and whatnot... which probably doesn't even matter, but that's what I was doing.....The computer froze, where the mouse doesn't move... which happens once in awhile, so it's nothing new... and I have to restart just by holding the power button and then turn it back on, and usually everything is fine....This time, when it loaded back up.... the desktop image was gone, and all the icons were just on a black background.... and the dock is completely gone! You know down at the bottom where all the programs are? I can't get to it at all now.... and I can't even minimize windows, because apparently they have nowhere to go now... the minimize button just does nothing... and I can't get to some programs now. I have no idea what happened... does anyone have a clue?I looked online a bunch, but can't find anything about something like this.Jweb or Chris (admin)... you guys have any clue?

are you kidding me? I'm a straight up mac yo.I didn't even read your post. I have no idea about that stuff. I just wanted to write that I am a mac, from way back.

Yeah I just did it again... no luck. I can't find anything about a problem like this... and I just can't imagine it's a virus or something... because mac's just don't get them.

I've had this same problem on my pc. I usually just use some combination of "system restore" and "chkdsk". I know that probably doesn't help much, but maybe there is something similar on a mac. Sorry dude, computer problems suck.

did u try clicking the apple at the top left, and going to system prefs and trying to fix it from the dock menu there?
Yeah, the dock preferences don't do anything. I tried clicking and unclicking the few options there are, but nothing.Does mac have a system restore type of thing? I don't even know.

as far as computers catching debilitating viruses.....your statement is FALSE. Macs have their uses....sadly they suck for online poker.Suited: It sounds to me like you have a serious problem (Macs dont crash like that)....the kind you need to call tech support for. Have fun with that.....those comp. support helplines are pure joy.

Macs don't get them, because it doesn't make sense for people to make virus's for macs. As a whole there are a lot more people who have a pc, and so you'll cause the most damage coding a virus to hurt pc users rather than a mac. If someone really wanted to make a virus for a mac they could.

oh i agree....just saying having a total crash on a MAC like suited up is describing is unusual. which is why he will probably need pro assistance which to fix the problem. Sucks.

I found a log of a bunch of crashes."dock crash" seems to be the one that is the problem.Doesn't give me any way to fix it though.The update isn't a bad idea, but it says I need at least 10.4 to use it... I am on 10.2.8

I'm a longtime Mac user and while personally I far prefer them to PCs, it's true they suck when it comes to online poker (relegated to Pokerroom, can't use pokertracker and its ilk, etc.)Anyway... though I've had my experience w crashes, never anything like this. I too would try to update 10.2.8 to the next free version (10.3 & 10.4 you have to pay for... basically your brother's computer is running on the Mac equivalent of Windows 98) if there is one (it would be 10.2.9, but your brother may have the highest 10.2.x version already). Anyway, go into your system prefs, click "software update," and if there is a free version it will install it automatically.Also, while I'm pretty sure this won't help, while you're in system prefs you might as well go up to "Dock" and to "Desktop & Screen Saver" (at the top, under Personal) and check to make sure everything's set right. Barring that, try this page on apple's site:http://www.info.apple.com/usen/macosx/If you don't find what you're looking for, try the discussion forums on that site, or the forums on:http://www.macosx.com/http://www.macrumors.com/http://www.macosxhints.com/Start a topic if you don't see your problem listed, and I'll bet you can get the fix you need.Good luck!edit: while spydergizard's links are all good, as I said, you'd need to pay for a full-digit jump (i.e. 10.2 to 10.3 or 10.4).

I am by no means a "computer person," but I have been strictly a MAC user for 5 years or so. Your problem sounds pretty serious, so I don't know if this will do anything for you, but here's my input.Hard re-boot the machine. I think the keystroke for this is Option Apple hold down the power button. If it's not that is Control, Option, Apple, hold down power button.As the machine is re-booting you should FLUSH THE P-RAM. Again, I'm not positive on the keystrokes, but I think it's something like holding down Option, Apple and the P and R buttons as the computer is making the Ding sound. If done correctly it will keep dinging as long as you're holding down the keys.As far as I know flushing the P-ram is Mac's version of rebuilding your desktop. Hope I could be helpful. Good luck.

Yeah, benhoug's suggestion for zapping the pram is a good one; don't know why I didn't think of it as it's worked for me before. Here's how to do it:Locate the following keys on your keyboard: COMMAND, OPTION, 'P', and 'R'. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 2.Restart your Macintosh and hold the COMMAND-OPTION-'P'-'R' key combination. You must be pressing this key combination before you get to the 'Welcome to Macintosh' screen.You will hear the startup chime. Continue holding the keys down until you have heard three chimes.Your computer's PRAM will be reset to the default values.Also, another idea to try: go into Applications/Utilities/disk utilityclick disk utilityselect your hard drive and click "repair disk permissions"see if that helps...

Ok... thanks for those suggestions... I will try them right now.But just an update... I did find a way around it so to speak, but the problem is still there.... I made another user account for myself, and that one is fresh and everything works fine, and I figured out how to move some programs through the public folder... so I can use this other account now. but i will still try what you said, cause the other account is still messed up.
