Anybody tracking any hot rookies this preseason? I'm in a huge league with a lot of roster spots, which means I have a lot of dead weight on my team at the moment. I'm looking to fill the space with promising rookies once they're available, on my radar at the moment are Ovechkin (obviously, but he's on everyone else's too), Thomas Vanek, and Bochenski. Crosby is loooooong gone, but if anyone has a heads up on some promising talent (likely/assured to make the NHL roster), let me know. Here's my roster at the moment, should give you an idea of how badly the talent pool is depleted in this league... C S. Horcoff (Edm - C,F) C M. Chouinard (Min - C,F) LW L. Nagy (Pho - LW,W,F) LW O. Kvasha (NYI - LW,W,F) RW S. Donovan (Cgy - RW,W,F) RW T. Letowski (Cls - RW,W,F) W P. Dagenais (Mon - LW,W,F) W M. Nilson (Cgy - LW,W,F) W P. Axelsson (Bos - LW,W,F) F T. White (Min - C,F) F J. Vigier (Atl - RW,W,F) F C. Gratton (Fla - C,F) D S. Gonchar (Pit - D) 161 0 D W. Redden (Ott - D) D D. Boyle (TB - D) D R. Blake (Col - D) D K. Timonen (Nsh - D) D J. Smith (Edm - D) Util J. Kolnik (Fla - RW,W,F) Util T. Connolly (Buf - C,F) Util M. Leclerc (Pho - LW,W,F) BN Y. PerreaultNA (Nsh - C,F) BN J. Chimera (Pho - LW,W,F) Goaltenders G C. Osgood (Det - G) G M. Prusek (Cls - G) BN B. Johnson (Van - G) 20 teams, 26 roster spots per team...ugly. I want to win this one almost as much as the FCP leagues. Unfortunately the fact that I have three non-starting goalies is going to cause a big headache for me.

Carter and Richards with Philadelphia come to mind along with Phaneuf with Calgary, Parise with New Jersey and Kronwall with Detroit (not sure if he is a rookie though). How much do you love Gonchar? Is he on every fantasy team you got?

Thanks for reminding me about Jeff Carter, he's at the top of my list since he'll be skating the Forsberg/Gagne line in Philly. Vanek is my other top choice, since I know I have no realistic shot at Ovechkin (and I'm not sure I really want him anyway...Caps).

Gonchar, 7th overall (stupid, I know, it was an autopick draft and for some reason he was at the top of my ranking). Top Ten Draft Picks:GoncharNagyReddenBoyleBlakeKvashaDonovanTimonenOsgoodHorcoffIf this had been a live draft, this team would look a lot different. Autopick blows.

From another thread I posted in:"Rookies (off the top of my head) with a shot at the Calder Trophy:Sidney Crosby (Pitt), Alexander Ovechkin (Washington), Jeff Carter (Phil, playing on Forsbergs line), Bochenski (Ottawa), Guillaume Latendresse (a long shot, Montrael), Deion Phaneuff (Calgary), Alexander Semin (from Washington). Maybe Gilbert Brule (Columbus) and Mike Richards (Phi).I would put Marcel Hossa(Montrael) and Kahari Lehtonen (Atl) on here, but I don't know if they count as rookies.I'm sure there are a few obvious ones I am leaving out. Probably the deepest crop of rookies ever (two drafts worth of player will have that effect)."And SSHH... but for a really good sleeper pick (if he is available), get Sammi Salo. The Canucks coaches have been raving about him in training camp. He looks to get a lot of powerplay time, and a lot more ice time in general.Marcel Hossa and Mike Ribero could be awesome additions, if available. So would Micheal Ryder, but he is nuring a minor injury. You gotta be nervous about any injury after 16 months off, IMO.

Taking into account likelyhood of making a roster as well as production, I'll rank them this way:1. Crosby (obviously)2. Ovechkin (should still produce with no talent around him)3. Vanek (goal scoring machine at every level)4. Parise (should make the squad and step right in and contribute nightly)5. Bochenski (we all know the line combination)6. Carter (good situation to step into and has world class talent)7. Getzlaf (was the best player in the rookie camp and during training camp, if he makes the team, he'll be in the top 2 lines and has the talent to produce)8. Phaneuf (lack of ice time would worry me as would a young defenseman's traditional inability to produce points, great team though so no worries about the +/- )9. Barker (kind of a longshot but if he makes it he'll have opportunities to make plays)10. Lundqvist (I believe once the Rangers fall out of contention, say by January, he'll be starting for Weekes or at the least sharing duty in net)

Since nobody has mentioned him, Corey Perry (ANA), he's flown under the radar due to his size, but he is scary talented. I'm not sure how many people got to see his two beauty goals against the Canucks on Saturday, but wow. The 2nd one (the spin-o-rama) would have been goal of the year if it were in the regular season. Perry's a winner, at every level he's played, and he should be playing with Getzlaf, another up and coming rook.

Totally forgot about him and Schremph. Both players could be awesome.

I'm an Anaheim fan and agree that Perry should be a highly productive player for years to come. I don't think however he'll make the team out of camp this year just in terms of the numbers game currently in Anaheim. I think if it comes down to Getzlaf or Perry for one spot (which is how it appears at this point) I think Ryan gets the nod due to his 2 way skills. If Perry lights up Portland (which he should) we should probably see him at some point this year though.

Under the new CBA, any player who has played 7 seasons in the league becomes a UFA. Any bubble player is more likely to spend the entire season in Junior/the minors because of this. The only reason Guillaume Latendresse isn't a lock to make Montrael is they are worried about having to send him down and wasting one of the 7 years on a half year. If Perry or Getzlaf get sent down, it seems less likely they will be called back up. All hockey poolers, keep this in mind. If a rookie makes a team, he is more likely to stay the entire season.

Parise first star last night, scoring first goal. Thats 2 plus a shootout goal plus an assist (i think) in 2 games
