Danny has talked a bit about good and bad strucures in the tournaments he has played lately, which makes it a good time to ask opinions on good home game tournament structures. Obviously the rounds can't be 90 minutes each in a home tournament on a saturday night, so what is an ideal structure for a 5 - 6 hours tournament with 20 - 30 players?I wrote a program to help in tournament administration (display blinds, payout, time left in round, etc.), and have experimented with many different structures over the last year. Here is my latest ... please reply with your favorite home-game structure.(And if anyone wants my program, send me a message or reply with an email addr i can send it to ... the program will even allow the creation of a 'series' of tournaments and track players' points and money totals)Small - Big - Ante - Length 25-50-0-1550-100-0-1575-150-0-15100-200-0-15150-300-0-20150-300-25-20150-300-50-20200-400-75-30200-400-100-30300-600-100-30400-800-150-30500-1000-200-201000-2000-400-201500-3000-500-202500-5000-1000-30tournament lasted about 7 hours with a couple breaks, 23 players started with $5000 each, unlimited rebuys in the first hour

this is for 20 - 30 players... we use chip values of $1,$5,$25 to begin with... so just three colors...every player starts out with $210 in chips... I know it seems small but the bets are also smaller with blinds at 1/2 to start...anyways blinds go up every 15 minutes and they go like soSmall--Big---Ante---Length1--------2------0---------15 minutes2--------4------0---------15 minutes4--------8------0----------15 minutes7--------15-----0---------15 mintues (color up to 5,25 here)15------30------0--------15 minutes(color up to 25,50 here)25------50------0--------15 minutes50-------100----0--------15 minutes( color up to $100 chips here)100-----200-----0--------15 minutes200-----400-----0--------15 minutes400-----800-----0--------15 minutes (color up to $500 chips here)500-----1000----0-------15 minutesanyways this structure works pretty well for that number of players for about a 3-5 hour game... we VERY rarely get to the 500/1000 level and I think this system works well... anyways give it a try... the $1,$5,$25 thing takes some getting used to but once you get it it works really well. and you can always find a way to mix some antes up in there too if you wanted...

That is a nice structure but you should keep the blind levels at 15 or 20 mins long. There is no need to change the time. This structure is alot better than the Bellagio $1k tourney on Fridays. Once you hit 100 antes, you should get rid of all the 25 chips. Just raise the antes from in increments of 100. This blind structure is almost the same structure at the one we use in our poker place. What is the buyin for your tourney? Unlimited rebuys for the first hour? How much are the rebuys? No wonder it took 7 hours.

Ours is usually like this...1000 in chips to start 15 minute rounds. Up to 40 players.25 - 2525 - 5050 - 10075 - 150100 - 200150 - 300200 - 400200 - 400 w/25 anti300 - 600 w/50 anti500 - 1000 w/100 anti1000 - 2000 w/200 antiStays at that level usually, or is over by then. We use chips of 25, 100, 500, and a 1k chip if its a bigger tournaments. This is accually a great setup for a rebuy tournament if you wanted to do that because the blinds arent too high by the end of the 4th level. Theres a rebuy for 1000 chips, and an add on for 2000 after the 4th level.
