This is a common misconception with people who's only exposure to lowball is omaha/8. The low hand is calculated from the top down, not bottom up. I get this all the time in the home game I play in because I'm the only lowball player. "How could I lose the low, I have the ace?" The ace is the bottom of the hand. It's just a kicker. Like the other poster mentioned, high card 7 is lower than high card 8. Regardless of kickers.
