Alright, I just put in some $ to Pokerstars after playing for over a year at Ultimatebet and am starting out playing some low limits, just getting a feel for the new site. Here's the situation: $.1/.25 NL Hold'em, we're playing 6 handed and I'm on the button to find 8s8c. 2 limpers from UTG and mid position, I limp and the small blind raises 1 bet to $.50. Everyone calls and the flop comes down AK8 rainbow, initial raiser checks, so I think "TRAP!" and he maybe has AK, AQ, or even AA or KK. Action is checked around to me and I bet about 1/2 the pot to see where my set stood in the pot. Preflop raiser smooth calls and the others fold. Now I'm thinking that he is definitely trapping me, but I just cant believe he has me beat w/ an over set... turn comes 3
and he checks to me again, I'm still skeptical about his holdings, but I make another 1/2 pot bet, comitting myself to the hand... and he raises me the rest of my stack which I quickly called. River another 3 and my 8s full lose to Ks full. Also, something I factored into my play was this: 5 hands previously, he limped in from UTG w/ A5os to see a board of JJ558 and got all in on the turn w/ the button player holding QJ to lose a $30 pot. So I marked him as a bit wreckless getting all in w/ the low boat. I am very confident in my read here that I was being trapped, but I also couldnt rule out that he might be holding AK and trapping me w/ a nearly dead 4 outer. That, or he also could have been holding a modest Ax or Ax suited. I've played cards for quite a while and consider myself to be a good player... but I dont know if I could have gotten away from my set. For now, I'm chalking it up to "oh well, just a rough beat, thats poker," Any thoughts?

You're going to pay off oversets and get paid off by undersets.Just the way it is. You can't be foldinng sets on uncoordinated boards regardless of how good your read is.

cant fold here when you hit a boat, no matter what your instincts are, these are hands your probably meant to lose with. If you had KK and he had AA, there's no way you fold either, so I don't see how your 88 on that board is any different. I think it was obvious that he was trapping, but eventually he was going to push all-in anyways and you'd probably have to call regardless.
