My friends and I usually get a NL Texas Hold 'em game together every weekend that we are free. The buy-in is 5 dollars and we play with my 11.5 gram suited chips. However we can never agree on how many chips each player should get to start. Chips are never assigned monetary value but are assigned numerical values. For example; White= 1 Red= 2 Blue=5 Green=10 Black=25 We normally each start with 10 white, 5 red, 4 blue, 3 green, and 2 black. First place is awarded money and second place gets their 5 dollars back. Although this system seems to work, I think there are better ways to do it. Any suggestions on chip value and amount of chips would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Two ideas....Dont have a $2 chip and try to cut it down to 4, maybe even 3 chips values.

I run a 18 person tourney at my house just about every weekend with my friends. We use:white-5red-10blue-25green-50black-100I usually end up starting everyone with 1300 in chips. I start the blinds at 5/10 and raise approximately every 20min-1/2 hour. We are usually done about 4.5 hours after. Seems to be a good tournament structure and everyone enjoys it.

My local games do the following starting chips and blinds. white = 5red = 25blue = 100green = 50075 in white, 325 in red, 600 in blue, and 500 in green for each person for a total of 1500.Blinds at 10/20, go up every 20 min to 15/30, 25/50, 50/100, 75/150, etc. Works out great for us.

We have a weekly sit-n-go at my place (admittedly, it's only one table - 7 or 8 players - so it might not work for your game), but we use whites for fives, greens for ten, reds for twenty-five and blues for fifty.Ten of each of those starts everyone out with a chip count of 900 with blinds and antes that go up in value every forty minutes. The good thing about this is that on the occasions where more people stop by, we have extra chips available so we can maintain the same structure.

I see this post is about 2 weeks dead, but I'm going to throw in my 2 cents...cause I can. hahaYou do pretty close to what I do at the weekly games at my place. We start with 100 or 125 chips, depending on what I feel like that day and how many players are going to be there (usaully 7-12). I only have 1, 2, 5, and 10s though. Towards the end, I'll pull out more 10s and cash in 1s to make people's stacks easier to handle and easier to count. Sometimes I'll change for 25s in late in the game, as well. I start the blinds at 1/2 and they go up (2/4, 3/6, 4/8, etc) every 20 mins. The games usually last 3.5-4 hours. When I go other places, I find it funny that people will start with 1500 and have chips worth 10, 20, 50, and 100 . I stated this in another post, but will again: why not make it easier for those that suck in math and start wtih 150 and have chips worth 1, 2, 5, and 10...same % wise, and makes it easier on those not so good at math.

I'm personally a fan of:White - 10Red - 20Blue - 50Green - 100Black - 200I rarely use black chips in my home games though due to the fact that nobody bothers using them anyways.

http://www.fullconta...3779&highlight=Question #1 in that post will answer a lot for you about how to narrow the tables from 2 to 1. I would say NEVER a table of 12. I have heard the most that should be done at one table is 10. Personally, when I have 10, I do two tables of 5. Then, the final table of 6. Same with 12. Two tables of 6, then the final table of 6.

Base your starting chip values on the type of game you want. If you want to have a fast tournament that ends quickly enough to play 2 or 3 rounds, then make the starting total small compared to the size of the blinds. If you want a longer tournament where people can sit back and pick their spots, make the chip stacks deeper. Fast tournaments will replicate the low buy in tourney's at local casinos, deep chip stacks will replicate the kind of game you see on TV.Fast tournaments focus mostly on preflop play, with a lot of all in before the flop. Deep stacks focus on post flop play with the best post flop players able to make the most of their chips.

We do:20 X 10 = 200 (White)8 X 50= 400 (Red)4 X 100= 400 (Blue)Blinds go up every 30 minutes:10-2020-4030-6050-100100-200200-400300-600400-800500-10001000-2000We just had 23 people last weekend and were done within 5 hours.I would also suggest to colr up when you don't need that color anymore. For instance: When we go to 50-100, we color up the 10s. If you have 3 whites you get a red for it. If you have 2, you lose it. It helps when later someone goes all in with 310 and someone calls, but doesn't have any 10s.

Our home games are set up where the buy-in (and re-buys) are $20, and you get $20 in chips. Those chips are comprised of $0.25 ones (white), $1.00 ones (red), $2.00 ones (blue), and $5.00 ones (green). We have tried playing with each person starting out with more chips, but the games ended up lasting way too long (start at 7 or 8pm, ending at 4am). With this setup, with an average of 8 players we are usually done by 1 or 2am, and on the rare occasion have played two tourneys in the same stetch.

In a limit game people don't bust out early and then stand around in the kitchen eating and drinking everthing in sight. Limit games also are more relaxed and seem to move faster, and it is not complicated to buy a few chips from someone to get back in tha game.Koroshiya 8)
