Last night I played in a $240 buy in, NL tourney at the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa. We started with 2500 units and the blinds started at 25-50 and went up every 20 minutes. At the time in question, the blinds were 200-400 and I was in late position (one seat to the right of the button) with AA. I only had about 3800 units (won three small pots and lost one mid-sized pot). The player in first position had 4300 units and limped in. It was folded to me and I raised to 1200. The big blind called all in with only 500. The player in first position called my raise. The flop came A (diamonds) --4 (hearts)--6 (hearts). The player in first position checked and I moved all in. He called with K-J hearts. The turn was Q-diamonds and the river was a heart, giving him a flush. I obviously moved all in to make it "expensive" for a player on a heart draw, but is the right play to check/bet low on that flop? I had very little information on this player because he just moved to my table one hand previously and did not play in that hand. Should I have made a smaller bet on the flop, checked it, or did I make the right play? It seems that plays like this continue to happen to me in multi-table tourneys and I keep missing the money. Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Steve

I, personally, would have moved all in before the flop. Don't even let him see his flush draw without paying 3,800. Other than that, I'de have moved all in on the flop, too.Not sure if it was a bad beat...I think he was getting a good price to draw to his flush.

what I don't understand is this, why would he check call an all in, if he is willing to call an all in anyways why doesn't he just go all in putting the pressure on his opponent, I have never understood this play by anyone

He's not getting pot odds, its something like 2 to 1. Plus it's stupid to go all in just on a draw, especially when you call an all in. He wanted to see a free card that's why he checked. He called because he's not a good player. If he called the all in he would of definitely called a smaller bet. In these kinds of situations it's the smartest thing to put all your chips in to make the drawing hands fold. Some people will take that their chances anyway. You had the percentages in your favor. That's the best you can wish for.

2-1 is good odds. But like steing said, it's better to put pressure on your opponent. If I was the guy on the flush draw, i'de have gone all in. *shrug* I assume he had alot of chips.

But he's only got 1/3 chance of winning.

The odds of him hitting his Flush draw are 1.90:1 while he was getting pot odds of 2.03:1 so STATISTICALLY I wouldn't say he made a BAD play, although considering he didn't have the Ace, it may have been a little risky. He wasn't drawing to the nut flush, if you had the Ace of hearts you already had him beat on the board, and if you were holding any other heart he was drawing dead, or even if the turn and the river both came a heart.I don't think you can really trash talk the guy here. He's a gambler and you have to gamble sometimes to win tournaments. I don't think I would have called you here, but I wouldn't hold it against him for doing so.Sorry about your luck man, I know it sucks with that kind of money on the line.- Tim

Let me see....I may be wrong here. You have 9 outs and 2 chances to hit them. 47 remaining cards.47/18=2.6You're roughly a 1.6-1 dog...so 2-1 pot odds is good. I think you're forgeting that someone is all in. Thus, changing the way you calculate pot odds.

Only 7 "live" outs though Ah Qh doesn't negates the flush.

The board had Ad and a Qd so if the Ah or the Qh hits it negates the flush draw and makes quads or a full house. Thus only 7 "live" outs

9 outs twice isn't the same as 18 outs once...it's worse than that. 2:1 is pretty close here to hit 9 outs.

I think that either this guy made a loose call, or he also put you on a flush draw and figured he had a better flush unless you had the ace. Either way I think you made the right play. You got your money in with the best hand.
