So I decided to play some 5/10 today and just take it easy. Came across this hand real early, give me some thoughts on how you would play it and if you agree with how I played the set of 5's. I'll tell you what the villain had after some responses. I'm in the bold.######################################################## Stage #159536934: Holdem Normal $5/$10 [ 2005-07-24 18:38:02 ] Seat 1 - KENTLAKE $375 in chipsSeat 2 - PHATMATT16 $178 in chipsSeat 3 - MRTT $312 in chipsSeat 4 - THERIVERBOY $245 in chipsSeat 5 - MOUGE $380.50 in chipsSeat 6 - WHISKEYRIVER $45.45 in chipsSeat 8 - AKADEMIKS $506 in chipsSeat 9 - ROKKE $173 in chips*** BLIND [dealer 5] ***WHISKEYRIVER - Post small blind $2AKADEMIKS - Post big blind $5THERIVERBOY - Post $5AKADEMIKS - Pocket [5h,5c] ROKKE - FoldsKENTLAKE - FoldsPHATMATT16 - Raises $5 to $10MRTT - FoldsTHERIVERBOY - Calls $5MOUGE - Calls $10WHISKEYRIVER - FoldsAKADEMIKS - Calls $5*** FLOP [5d,10c,8s] ***AKADEMIKS - ChecksPHATMATT16 - Bets $5THERIVERBOY - Calls $5MOUGE - Calls $5AKADEMIKS - Raises $5 to $10PHATMATT16 - Calls $5THERIVERBOY - Calls $5MOUGE - Calls $5*** TURN [5d,10c,8s,Kc] ***AKADEMIKS - Bets $10PHATMATT16 - FoldsTHERIVERBOY - Calls $10MOUGE - Raises $10 to $20AKADEMIKS - Raises $10 to $30THERIVERBOY - Calls $20MOUGE - Raises $10 to $40AKADEMIKS - Calls $10THERIVERBOY - Calls $10*** RIVER [5d,10c,8s,Kc,4h] ***AKADEMIKS - Bets $10THERIVERBOY - FoldsMOUGE - Raises $10 to $20AKADEMIKS - Calls $10

I'm probably leading the flop with bottom set and straight draw possibilities, let the original raiser make the decision. With the way this went down I smell a set of 8's or 10s. I like the way you played it and theres enough out there that the river three bet is kind of eh with 4th set
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

yeah I ended up running into a set of 8's. That's poker though, what can you do. I was strongly considering check-calling the river, but I bet just in case he had something like 2 pair or an over played AK, AA and etc. I think maybe I could have saved a bet on the river, but that's about it. Set over set sucks unless your on the winning side.

well, the flop checkraise was good. the board isn't very coordinated, and you have a monster, so you really just want to build up the pot (there's no pressure to push people off yet). i like the flop checkraise since the bettor is to his immediate left.i also think you should raise the river again. set over sets happen, but they don't happen often enough to offset the value you gain by three-betting. occasionally, you'll lose two bets when they reraise, but much more often, you'll gain one bet (sometimes two against an aggressive player), when they're overplaying top pair or two pair.aseem

I didn't go 3 bets, because I was pretty sure I was beat, which is why I strongly considered check-calling with the set of 5's. I think math is 1 thing, but using your instincts is important too. I didn't think he could have overplayed 2 pair that way, just wouldn't make much sense. The only hands that make sense are 88 or TT and a very slight chance of KT, but still doubtful. It also wasn't against a particularly aggressive player, so when he woke up on the turn, I suspected a lot of strength when he capped. I check-raised the flop because the pre-flop raiser was to my left, meaning I could suck the others in for bets as they would probably call 1 on an all low board hoping to pair up.

smells of a set of 8's to me (tens MAY have raised pre-flop?) losing set vs set sucks, but it happens. 8) He MAY have caught two pair (tens and 8's?) but I don't think so...
