SBriand 4
About to venture into the B&M and wondered which casino is decent?Neither Greektown or Motor City Casino say much of anything on their websites regarding what games they really offer and such. Thanks!-Steve
Footballguru 0
never been there but my cousin is a dealer at motor city and he told me that people there are very shady and work in groups, in limit games. So if you play limit at motor city, be aware.Id suggest Windsor
Mandelbrot 0
I've played at Motor City -- I didn't like it. First, there's no rail to watch people play and they won't let you wander around and watch. That's just lame. Second, they don't take rakes from the pot. Instead they charge you like 8$ (e.g. take it from your stack) everytime there's a dealer switch. Third, they have some weird rules. One guy hit a big hand to take a huge pot. When he turned over his cards, one of them touched the board. The dealer ruled it a dead hand as a result and he lost. Fourth, it's small. If you wanna get in on a 1/2 or 2/4 table on a weekend, goodluck. You'll be waiting three hours at least. Fifth, they don't do any tourneys. Zero. And their bad beat jackpot is a friggin joke, have to get beaten while holding a hand of Aces full of 8s or better. Overall, it's a shady place. Not very welcoming and nothing compared to Vegas poker rooms like Mirage and Bellagio.
jcdgoad 0
I played quite a bit at greektown casino about 2 years ago. The room has 9 or 10 tables that are packed in pretty tight. The lowest limit game that they had at the the time was 5/10 limit hold em. That was the game I normally played. They usually had 3 or 4 5/10 hold em games going and a couple of 10/20 limit holdem games along with a couple of 7 card stud tables and a high rollers table. I liked playing there a lot. The games were run very well and were lose enough to beat with a tight agressive strategy. At the time I played at greektown Motor city did not have a poker room so it was very busy. It was not uncommon to wait 3 to 5 hours for a seat on the weekend. Overall I like Greektown's poker room alot.
SBriand 4
Hmmm, MC says they do touneys during the week...but now I am not to keen on going there. What's the skinny on Windsor? That is definately doable. Thanks for the info.

Not very welcoming and nothing compared to Vegas poker rooms like Mirage and Bellagio.I've played in both casinos and both are very welcoming and very friendly atmospheres. The dealers are not Bellagio, but they're quite capable. The rake that Mandlebrot is speaking of is for NO LIMIT. and the rake for limit is like 10% up to 5 bucks + 1 for the bad beat which is kinda high, but what're ya gonna do? Secondly, the guess the rule is that if your cards touch the community cards, your hand is dead. I won a huge pot off some doofus who cracked my Aces because his cards touched the board. Note, this was after the guy was told NUMEROUS times not to do it. Thirdly there are no 1/2 or 2/4 tables. 3/6 in Greektown and 5/10 in Motor City are the lowest. Both have no limit cash games. And the bad beat is AAAJJ beaten by quads or better. it's always around 20K. Hope this helps. Motor City rake is a bit higher but it's a bit nicer and you get free food. archaeon99 0
I would like to expand on what bansheeracer said, for the sake of completeness. This information comes from personal experience with the three Detroit casinos, and information found at http://www.casinowindsor.com for Windsor.Casino Windsor's poker room opened on February 11, and is open 24 hours a day. I have not yet been there, but according to information on their website, they have a total of ten tables, spreading stud, Hold 'em, and Omaha. Limits start at 3/6 for Hold 'em, up to no limit. No information on Omaha or stud limits. I know nothing about their comp system.Motor City Casino's poker room has eight tables, also open 24 hours. The same three games are offered as at Windsor. Hold 'em starts at 5/10 going up to 20/40, with a $100-min no limit game, blinds of 5 and 5. The Omaha game offered is 8/b high low, 5/10, with a full kill. From 8am to 4pm on weekdays, Motor City runs what they call "Turbo" tournaments. These are $100 buy in single table tournaments with an 800/200 payout structure. Players start with T2000 and blinds start at 20-40, but I do not know the blind round structure. Different buy-in amounts are slated to be added, perhaps as low as $25 or as high as $1000. As mentioned previously, comps are available and free: self-serve drinks, chips, and cookies, and pre-made sandwiches for the asking. There is usually a waitress taking drink orders as well. Note that Motor City Casino's poker room is completely smoke-free.Greektown Casino holds the city's first poker room. It has expanded to 16 tables from the original 8 and is open 24 hours. Games spread regularly are stud and Hold 'em. Stud is offered in 1-5 or 2-10, and Hold 'em in several flavors: 3/6 up to 20/40, and two no-limit structures: $50 min, $100 max with blinds of 1 and 2, and a $100 min, no-max game with blinds of 2, 5, and 5. Friday is the home of the big game, a $1000 minimum buy-in no limit game, blinds of 10 and 25. Finally, Tuesdays at noon a pot-limit Omaha game, high-only, is spread. I don't know the min or max buy-in, but I believe the blinds in that game are 5 and 5. The floorpersons handle comps, which for the lower limits are a $6 coupon to (essentially) a hot dog stand just outside the poker room. For the higher limit games, I would imagine full comps to one of the nearby restaurants are provided. A full bar is found in the poker room, with at least one waitress taking orders at all times. Greektown Casino's poker room allows smoking on the lower limit side, save the 1 and 10 seats at each table. No smoking is permitted in the higher-stakes room. The MGM Grand does not yet offer a poker room.Whew -- hope this helps out those in the Detroit / Toledo area who've always wanted to take the B&M plunge.Edited to add information about smoking policies. benhoug 0
A friend of mine plays regularly in the Greektown casino, and based on my conversations with him, I think it's a pretty easy game. He plays the 1 2 NL table w/ a min. 100 buy-in. He said suckers just come in and drop off their hundred bucks in a few minutes, then get up and leave. I'd love to make it there for a game, but I live several hours away.
Nimbletoe 0
I've been to Windsor's room twice. I didn't see anything but hold'em, so I don't know why their site says different. Anyway, they had 3 3/6 tables, 3 100max NL tables (not sure on blinds, but i'd assume 1/2), a 5/10, 10/20, 15/30, 200max NL, 1000 minimum NL, and maybe a 20/40. I played 3/6 both times, and while there were some fish, there were also people that were clearly better than myself (i've only been playing for a few months though, not saying much). There's no smoking in the room, but there's also no where to watch the actions, as the room is players only and there isn't a railing. The dealers were just ok on average, I had a few really cool ones that were good dealers, and a few who barely knew the rules. One didn't know them at all, and when a blind left to go to the bathroom, hell almost broke loose. As far as the waits go... heh. I went on a Saturday late afternoon, and waited 5 hours for a table. I could have got on a 100NL maybe an hour earlier than that, but I was with a friend who was too nervous about his game to try it. They do allow call ahead, but you'll still be waiting on the weekend. The first time I went, sunday at around 6pm, I only waited about a half an hour. I think i'll be going back to play no limit sometime this weekend or next week. I'll post a followup for anyone interested on how that goes.Btw, I got cleaned out at the 3/6 both times. Nut flush lost to four jacks, the last coming on the river. Trip jacks then lost to trip queens the next hand to the same guy. =(
SBriand 4
I think I am going to head up Sunday afternoon and check it out for sure. Just play a little 3/6. What is their minimum buy in on the 3/6?
Nimbletoe 0
Err, sorry I didn't check back, but if you haven't gone yet the minimum buy in for 3/6 was 60 bucks, minimum for 100NL was 50 bucks.
HtotheNootch 0
I'll be in Detroit April 6-9 for my brothers wedding. Since there's going to be some serious downtime, I might play a little poker - am trying to convince my brother to play on the 6th. Any FCP'ers who frequent these places let me know, and at the worst will turn some cards and have some beers.

Merlopj 0
after months of cheap online SnGs, occasional home games and a (now defunct) monthly tourney, I feel like I'm cheating myself if I don't give the casinos a shot. I do fairly well at $5 and $10 sngs online (suckouts aside), and can usually win a few bucks w/ my friends. I started doing well at a local tourney, but it got cancelled before I could start whomping on people butt good.I'd like to go check out the 1-2 NL ($100 max buy) at Greektown and was wondering if anyone had anything to say about the place? Is it run well? fishy? will my sets hit everytime? ;-) I have never played limit hold-em and don't think it'd be a good idea to learn on a 3-6 table (my bankroll isn't really a bankroll)anyway, thoughts? advice? personal critiques? thanxP
nutzbuster 7
Generally not very good. Played there last year while in town for the Ryder Cup. I walked past the Greektown Casino's tables and there was a 4 hour wait. NOT! (granted I am spoiled living in AZ where waits for tables are maybe 5 minutes and Vegas is a very short drive/cheap flight away). We then went over to Greektown and it was a total cluster Fuk. The room is actually 2 or 3 odd shaped old storage rooms. The whole casino is housed in what used to be an huge old warehouse building so the poker room is a series of rooms separtated brick walls. Really weird and crowded. Most of the tables are jammed in so tight you can't even walk between them. The whole room set up was put together in haste, like a total afterthought. Cool building in gereral but the whole place is very coonfusing to get around in, like a huge gerbil habitrail! Anyway, the poker wait was maybe 45 minutes and game was easy, pulling out over $300 in just a few hours. But the folks running the room seemed overwhelmed and the list was in shambles. Not good and would not go back. But it shouldn't be this way!Architecturally the building is great. Very large and like 8 floors high. I just don't understand why these casinos don't get there act together and capitalize on the poker boom by constructing large, open, quality poker rooms? Take a design que from Commerce in L.A. or Bellagios room. God knows they have the money and it wouldn't take much to pull it off. And how come Detroits casinos aren't along the river front? What a HUGE mistake they made there!
