A Misread from Kid Poker

Daniel Negreanu has always been revered for his uncanny ability to read opponents as if their hands were face up, but even"Kid Poker" couldn't sniff out the set on the last hand.

The final board read 2h.gif6d.gif7h.gif9c.gifkh.gif, and Negreanu's opponent had checked the action. Sensing weakness, or perhaps going for a value bet, Negreanu decided to stick a bet of approximately 3,700 into the middle.

"A pair of sevens," was Negreanu's announcement when his opponent called. "Oh, three nines?"

The other player had tabled his 9s.gif9d.gif, and with a befuddled expression still on his face, Negreanu sent his cards into the muck.

Kid Poker Running Good... or Bad?

We heard Daniel Negreanu and his tablemates avidly discussing the unlikely victory posted by Michael Malm, who recently took down Event #8, ($2,500 Eight-Game Mix), for a first prize of $225,104, without even knowing how to play a few of the games being spread in that tournament.

Sticking around to hear some interesting banter, we also saw "Kid Poker" scoop a couple pots of his own, and although Negreanu ran well in both hands, he would be the first to tell you that he also got unlucky.

First, Negreanu limped in after action folded to him in the small blind. Fellow Canadian Mark Radoja checked his option from the big blind, and the flop fell qh.gifks.gif2s.gif. Negreanu then led out for a small bet, and Radoja insta-folded.

"Sheesh!," said Negreanu, while tabling his 10s.gif9s.gif for straight and flush draws. "Great flop... I was ready to go there."

On the next hand, Negreanu called a preflop raise of 3,400 from the button, and playing a three-way flop he saw the dealer spread the 10d.gif7d.gifqh.gif across the felt.

Both players checked to Negreanu, and his 5,000 wager earned him the pot.

"Again!," said Negreanu, obviously displeased that he had not found at least one caller with his 10s.gif10h.gif. "A set of tens and nothin'!"

Despite not being able to parlay these great flops into monster pots, Negreanu has steadily climbed the chip counts throughout the day, and he now holds one of the largest stacks in the room.

Day 1 Concludes; Little Leads with Negreanu Close Behind

Day 1 of Event #32: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em (Six Handed) has come and gone. When registration closed, 516 players had ponied up the buy-in for this event and the top prize was set at over $600,000. Finishing the day in the pole position was Jonathan Little with 179,700 in chips. Hot on his heels are a group of tough competitors including Daniel Negreanu (168,600), Brian Rast (151,200) and Justin Smith (149,800).

Many top pros came and went in this event including Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst, Phil Hellmuth, Ben Lamb and Joe Hachem, but not all is lost as plenty of big names advanced to Day 2. Some of those moving on are Brock Parker, Steve O'Dwyer, Chris Klodnicki, Allen Bari, Max Steinberg, TJ Cloutier, Matt Waxman and Gavin Smith.

Day 2 will kick off at 1 p.m. with the cards in the air, and it's going to be a great day of poker. On tap will be the money bubble and then the quest for the final table. With around 120 players still left in the hunt, things will be fast and furious from the get go.

Negreanu Curious

The hand started with Chris Klodnicki opening to 3,500 from the button, and was called by Daniel Negreanu in the small blind. The flop came down 10s.gifkh.gif3h.gif and both players checked, before the 3d.gif fell on the turn. Negreanu quickly threw out a bet of 5,100, and was called moments later, as the 4d.gif was turned over, completing the board.

Negreanu checked over to Klondicki, who took his time, before throwing out a bet of 11,000.

“I’m thinking you have ace-ten, or I got you,” Negreanu said, thinking about his decision. He finally made the call and tabled his 2h.gif2c.gif which was good to win the hand, as Klodnicki’s cards flew into the muck.

“Ace-ten?” asked Klodnicki, “That’s all?”

“Well I thought you might have that. I just don’t like folding. I always want to know,” concluded Negreanu, as he raked in the pot.

Negreanu moves up to 155,000 as Klodnicki falls down to 97,000 in chips.

Negreanu Makes the Perfect Read, Eriquezzo Makes Better Bluff

A hand just went down that thrilled the railbirds, and it gave Ryan Eriquezzo's heart a little jolt too.

Playing a heads-up pot against Daniel Negreanu, Eriquezzo responded to an opening raise of 4,300 by "Kid Poker" with a three-bet to 12,200.

"How much more does he want?," Negreanu asked the dealer, before plunking his calling chips into the pot.

Negreanu quickly checked when the 10s.gifqs.gif2c.gif flop hit the board, and Eriquezzo opted for a bet of 11,100. Negreanu was not impressed, however, and he raised it up to 27,100. After Eriquezzo called, the turn came js.gif, and that's when things became interesting.

With the straight and flush draws both getting there on the turn, Negreanu elected to lead out for 31,000, and Eriquezzo immediately moved all in over the top.

"What a dirty card," shot Negreanu, as he clapped the cushion on the table. "That's a pretty sick turn."

Negreanu then asked for a count, and after determining that he would need to risk 65,300 more, he went into the tank to calculate all of the factors evident only to a player like Daniel Negreanu.

"This is so stupid, I might fold the best hand here," he said while mulling his options. "You seem like the type to do that with aces, and the ace of spades."

Eriquezzo sat still as a stone during Negreanu's interrogation, even as a massage attendant dutifully rubbed his back and shoulders, trying his best to avoid giving the hand reading master any additional information.

"I don't think I'm folding here," said Negreanu, continuing an internal monologue but delivering it to an audience of spectators and fellow players. "But, you could have ace-king with a spade, and you'll still get there some of the time."

Eventually, despite it appearing to all the world that Negreanu was poised to call, his hand went soaring into the muck.

"Whew!," said Eriquezzo, exhaling in relief while showing the as.gifjd.gif for a perfectly executed semi-bluff. "It looked like you were never folding there."

"Nice hand," offered Negreanu, shaking his head seemingly to confirm his initial suspicions, and to chide himself for not pulling the trigger. "I thought you might have something like that."

Negreanu Eliminated

Benjamin Reinhart opened to 6,500 from the hijack, before Daniel Negreanu moved all in for his remaining 61,600 in chips. Reinhart made the call, as both players tabled their cards.

Negreanu: as.gif8d.gif

Reinhart: ac.gifqh.gif

The board came down 7d.gifjh.gif9c.gifks.gif4s.gif to see the PokerStars Team Pro eliminated from the tournament.
