BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — Mitt Romney returned from a three-week spring break in 1965 to resume his studies as a highschool senior at the prestigious Cranbrook School. Back on the handsome campus, studded with Tudor brick buildings and manicured fields, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases. John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors. The incident was recalled similarly by five students, who gave their accounts independently of one another. Four of them — Friedemann, now a dentist; Phillip Maxwell, a lawyer; Thomas Buford, a retired prosecutor; and David Seed, a retired principal — spoke on the record. Another former student who witnessed the incident asked not to be named. The men have differing political affiliations, although they mostly lean Democratic. Buford volunteered for Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008. Seed, a registered independent, has served as a Republican county chairman in Michigan. All of them said that politics in no way colored their recollections.Long Article Continued At Link Above

Well, I don't think Obama cut the hair off of people who didn't do coke with him (citation needed).

Well the truth is we never knew anything about President Obama's early life when he was candidate Obama. And even know we have no idea what he was like when he was younger, other than being a coke head I mean.

I wasn't. I feel like that means something about me, so I don't think this incident doesn't mean anything about Romney.

Then be SHOCKED. Never picked on any other kids, ever. I was a victim of it plenty of times, saved a few kids from it, but never did it. I don't think all kids are monsters. Just MITT ROMNEY.

Don't be a liar vb. It is a completely normal, average thing for the 18-year old son of a governor at a fancy prep school to lead a group of students in an assault against someone who was not harming them. I mean, how can you even pretend that there aren't multiple instances in your own life that are directly comparable to that. I know me and Ben Mulroney* used to string up Polacks all the time in University.Read that part again - it was 1965. Romney was born in 1947. He was a high school senior. He was (about) 18 - old enough to vote. He led students to physically assault another student. Would we feel different if he had an assault conviction?I'm not suggesting we string the guy up. Hell, I'm not even sure if I'd argue this would change whether or not I'd vote for him, so you can call it a pointless smear if you want. For chrissakes, the story has quotes in it...are we supposed to believe these guys remember word-for-word something that was said 45 years ago? *For Canadians only

Honestly one of my biggest regrets and embarrassments was picking on a gay kid in high school. I got him down and used lipstick and painted his nose red, his name was Rudolph. I apologized to him later but I have always had a ton of guilt over it. Guilt is tansient though and I did use it to learn I suppose, but when I read this I couldn't help but think I am not the one to point fingers at him. It was odd too, as I was usually the kid protecting the little guy, well I was the little guy for the most part, but ugh. I was an ass that time.

The ironic part of the story is that all the people coming forward telling about this are saying they regret this, but we are to assume of course that Mitt doesn't regret this at all.A guy in 1965 wears his hair really feminine and peroxide bleached blond....sounds like he wanted the negative attention.

One thing that's always shocked me is how little political hay is made from peoples teen years. There's always going to be some gigantic indiscretion, stupid decision or action, someone made at 17. Bonus, there's always going to be some classmate who remembers it and didn't like you back then, or perhaps their own lives didn't turn out very well, and they're willing to 'tell the story'.Michael Jordan told the story about how after he watched Roots, he was so moved to anger, he took it out on some random white kid in his high school. He talked about how he eventually came to realize how stupid that was and how he really regretted doing it.Every single one of us did something stupid when we were 12, or 15, or 18, or 22.These kinds of smear tactics don't work, save for being talking-points for deluded leftist partisans who are able to convince themselves that they're somehow 'better' because their indiscretion with the fag in high school involved licking his ass rather than kicking his ass.

First of all, it's classmates plural, as in 5 of them. Second of all, one of them is identified as having been a "close friend." Third of all, "Four of them — Friedemann, now a dentist; Phillip Maxwell, a lawyer; Thomas Buford, a retired prosecutor; and David Seed, a retired principal — spoke on the record." You make it sound like it's one guy who didn't like him, or who maybe didn't have a very good life. It's actually 5 guys including a close friend, and they sound relatively successful (although it's admittedly difficult to gauge a person's happiness and success based simply on their job title).
Karl: She was a bit -- what's the word that you can use, cuz I don't wanna offend anyone?
Steve: Was she a homeless person?
Karl: Yeah but sort of mental homeless.
