Day 1 completed Booth, Mueller Lead after Day 1Posted 13 minutes ago by SantanaBandana • Level 5 Feels good to be Greg MuellerDay 1 of the 2011 Poker Player's Championship is history, and after five levels of play, Doug Booth is the chip leader with 324,600 chips, and Greg "FBT" Mueller is right behind him with 322,700.Numbers have been up at the World Series of Poker this year, and this event did not disappoint. A total of 128 players - a 10 percent increase from last year - ponied up $50,000 generating a prizepool of $6,144,000. The winner will receive $1,720,328 to go along with a shiny new bracelet and the illustrious David "Chip" Reese Memorial Trophy.Only five of the entrants busted during Day 1. Arturo Diaz was our first victim, and was eliminated by Phil Galfond during a hand of pot-limit Omaha. Galfond had a set of queens, Diaz a set of tens, and Galfond held when the river bricked. Phil Laak was the second to bust. He got his stack in against David "ODB" Baker during deuce-to-seven triple draw. They both held , Baker paired his deuce, and Laak paired his seven, eliminating him from the tournament.Andrew Pantling, Jani Sointula, and Eli Elezra were the other two to bust on Day 1.For a second it looked like Daniel Negreanu was also going to hit the rail. Kid Poker sunk as low as 23,000, but battled all the way back to 65,100 chips. During his comeback, he made the nuts in a deuce-to-seven hand against Robert Williamson III who drew the second nuts on the first draw. Negreanu is very excited to still be alive, tweeting, "So h[a]ppy to still be in it. Hope to run hot from here on out!"Surprisingly, only two former champions participated in this year's event. David Bach and Michael Mizrachi were in attendance, while Freddy Deeb and Scotty Nguyen were notably absent. Day 4 Concludes; Ly Leads Final NinePosted 50 minutes ago by ShamusA long, long, long day and night of poker has concluded, with nine players still remaining with chips in Event No. 55, the $50,000 Poker Player's Championship. Seven 100-minute levels today saw the field cut from 29 to the final nine, with Minh Ly ending the day with the most chips.It took about five hours of Day 4 for the field to be trimmed to 16 and the money bubble to burst. Among those going out prior to making the cash were Phil Galfond, David Oppenheim, David "ODB" Baker, Gus Hansen, Shaun Deeb, and Jon Turner. Robert Mizrachi -- hoping to match his brother Michael's victory in this same event last year -- saw his tourney journey come to an end in 17th, just one spot shy of the cash.Meanwhile, Brian Rast, Scott Seiver, and Matt Glantz began to push forward to the top of the counts as the first players to make the money were eliminated. Sebastian Ruthenberg (16th), Barry Greenstein (15th), and Michael Binger (14th) went out in relatively rapid succession, followed by start-of-Day-4 leader Josh Arieh in 13th. Some controversy at the televised final table as they aren't allowing players to wear any logos on hats. New WSOP Rule: No Hat Logos Allowed Without question, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is the greatest poker event in the world. It’s got everything: tradition, scale, glory, ESPN and the opportunity for an unknown to become instantly rich and famous. During my first trip to the WSOP in 2004, I asked the producers from ESPN their opinion on player logos and the response was as quick as it was refreshing: “We are just here to film a poker tournament; we don’t care what the players wear. We don’t want them to even know we are here filming.”As the event has grown and changed over the past seven years, so have the corporate motives behind the WSOP. Without question, Caesar’s has been a good steward of the game, often striking the right balance between what’s best for players and what’s best for the company.However, Caesar’s has severely crossed that line with Rule 53© of the 2011 World Series of Poker® Official Tournament Rules which states:“Hats may be worn at tables intended for television taping but may not display any logo or promotional language, except for those logoed items sold to the general public through traditional commercial retail outlets.” You see, according to Caesar’s, the WSOP broadcast has become too commercialized, so they need to remove these player sponsorship opportunities for the betterment of the game. Apparently, players wearing logos on their hats hurt distribution, ratings, etc. This rule hurts every sponsored poker player and every player who has ever dreamed of being sponsored. The most lucrative sponsorship “inventory” a poker player has to sell is the front of his/her hat, and Caesar’s just arbitrarily took it away. It will diminish the value of the “A” list poker superstars who are currently sponsored. This rule will eliminate sponsorship dollars for the regular Joe’s who are lucky enough to make it to an ESPN TV table.When my client Phil Hellmuth plunked down the $50,000 buy-in and made the final table of this year’s Poker Players Championship, the folks at Caesar’s and ESPN were ecstatic because they know the 11 time WSOP champ brings ratings. That didn’t stop them, however, from telling him he couldn’t wear a hat from his sponsor Aria Resort & Casino. Somehow, inexplicably, an Aria logo on his shirt is allowed, but the logo on his hat would tarnish and diminish the television product.Since my first WSOP in 2004, Caesar’s has methodically, year by year, inch by inch encroached on player likeness rights. Rast called to see the flop.The flop came down {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{5-Spades} and Rast was first up. He led for two million. And yes, that's not a typo. Hellmuth splash-jammed his chips into the middle for an all-in bet of 2.03 million. Rast called the extra little bit.Hellmuth: {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}Rast: {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}Hellmuth walked over and draped himself over the rail in front of his wife. The turn was dealt the {7-Hearts} to give Rast two pair, but it didn't matter as Hellmuth still had a set. The river completed the board with the {7-Clubs} and even though Rast filed up, Hellmuth made a higher full house.He gave his wife a high five, a kiss and a big hug.
