Poor Tournament Director Rulings

Recommended Posts

Figure there should be a thread for poor/questionable tournament director rulings .....So I'm playing a $65 NLHE live tourney in Daytona Thursday night and a hand comes up where the dealer accidentally flops out 4 cards ...... she (the dealer) calls the floor Floor comes over and the dealer explains she accidentally flopped 4 cards so the floor says "OK, turn all 4 cards upside down, mix them up, and pick one and that will be the burn; now turn up the 3 remaining cards and that is your flop"I politely told the floor that I did not think this was correct unless this was some sort of house rule. He said 'we play by tournament rules here'. It took everything in me not to be a smartass cause we were obviously playing a tournament so I responded "roberts rules?" and he looked like he didnt know what I was talking about. I asked if he was the only floor and if we could get a 2nd opinion so they called over the main tournament director guy who proceeded to give the exact same answer as the original floor did.I again politely explained (trying not to sound like a douchebag, but this greatly effected my hand as the burn card they just randomly chose was my set card) that this was not correct if they played by roberts rules. The TD said 'all TD rules are final, lets continue on with the hand". I just let it go, but this was pretty silly. On break the TD came up to me and said 'what do you think the correct ruling there should have been?' I told him that if they played by roberts rules that they should have redealt the entire flop and he laughed and said 'that is completely ridiculous'. I just walked away and went outside to smoke a cigarette.

I was involved in a live tournament recently where something like that happened. The dealer brought out two burn cards on accident. The floor was called over and the final decision was to put the 2 burn cards and the flop back in the deck and reshuffle and do the flop over again. I wasn't involved in the hand but the first flop gave the utg position 2 pair and the second flop gave the same guy top pair and the button flopped a straight. I just laugh...

QFTI get a kick out of the fact that whenever I mention Robert's Rules to someone, they look at me like I'm trying to quote my uncle Bob.One of the problems with bad rulings is that the average player at that table now thinks that it is the correct ruling, which leads to confusion somewhere down the road. For example, I was dealing last night and one of our regulars asked me about an all in in no-limit that is less than a full raise but more than half (see the previous dna thread). I told him that it didn't reopen the action. His reply was "BUT IT"S MORE THAN HALF!!" I assured him that it had to be a full raise in no limit. Then he asked, "Well, when did y'all change the rule? Because I've seen it ruled differently in here before." All I could do was acknowledge that he probably had seen a mistake made, since I've seen it made in the room. You really can't blame him for being confused about the rule, when "professionals" have ruled it incorrectly at tables where he was playing. On a cool sidenote, he accepted my explanation of the rule without arguing, which in my room means that I have earned some respect from the regular players.Another note: As a player, you should study the rules. It's YOUR money that is at stake. While knowing the rules doesn't prevent a floorperson from making a mistake (such as the one made in the tournament dna was playing), it does at least give you a fighting chance. For example, I was playing in a tournament last year at Ceasar's Palace, and the dealer made an incorrect ruling (we had been moved to the final two tables, and the dealer was going to let a player not pay the small blind and wait for the button to pass). I called for the floor, and politely reminded him that per TDA rules, the player should pay the blind and play the hand. The floor agreed, and the player busted out on that hand (it was a "turbo" and he was basically pot committed). The player wasn't happy with me, but my knowledge of the rules helped me get one spot closer to the money. Of course, I didn't cash.

To be honest, I've seen stuff like this all the time. It's kind of absurd that the people running poker rooms don't know anything about the rules.Don't they have to go through some type of training or test so they can properly make decisionswhen needed?

I was involved in a lol ruling one time and I still couldn't believe it.So I'm in the SB with KK. Player in the Co raises, I r/r, he r/r, I r/r and then the dealer says that I can't raise anymore that I have to just call. I was like WTF?!?! Everyone at the table couldn't believe it either. They called the TD and the TD agreed with the dealer's ruling. lol WTF. I said well I'm all in on the flop anyway. CO called. Flop was 9xx. He had 99.
