Poker Winners are DifferentAlan SchoonmakerBest poker-related book I've read this year.Would reccommend it to intermediate/advanced players who want better results from themselves. Beginners have a lot of other material they should be concentrating on.I think there is so much poker information out there on the math of poker, importance of position/aggression, etc that a lot of players fail to appreciate the importance of their mental state.I know I've let this slip over the past year or so, and it's resulted in less than stellar results.

Psychological/Social insight is what seperates the decent player from the great player, that combined with a high level of focus & fast analytical skills. That's not something that can be taught easily though, it requires understanding of certain spiritual concepts even the most intelligent people have trouble grasping. Poker math/position etc. is quite easy, and the beginner might think he's got an edge when he knows the button is a decent position to play from, pro's recognise these patterns and prey on them & especially prey on fear (which most players have, some more than others ofcourse).

There was a point a few years ago that i was well on my way to being a great player. At the time I went through a divorce and a number of other very emotional situations. It ultimately led me being a poker disaster for about 2 years, tilting off 10's of thousands of dollars trying to "beat" every game I was in and just playing poorly. My poker mindset is extremely solid and I don't tilt much at all anymore. I LOVE the psychology of the game and I will give this book a shot. Thanks!

alan schoonmaker is involved in a little known prop bet with mason malmuth on who can get the most books published that say the same thing. mason shot an angle though by starting his own publishing company. filthy angle shooter.
