Ranges [$38, 9-man]

Up until this point of the match, villain has not shown anything remarkable, so we could safely assume he's a standard tight reg. First time in this match that he openshoved UTG though. What should our range be here calling/shoving? Call/fold/shove as played?I have better reads on villain, but these materialized after this hand, so bringing them up now should be irrelevant.PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, 38 Tournament, 100/200 Blinds (7 handed) - Poker-Stars Replayer from Poker Hands Replayer1243.gifBB (t1325)UTG (t1765)MP1 (t2130)Avii (MP2) (t2645)CO (t840)Button (t3960)SB (t835)Avii's M: 8.82Preflop: Avii is MP2 with J :ts, J :club:UTG bets t1765 (All-In), 1 fold, Hero (t0) ?

villain has an M of 5.9, thats not horrible, i got to believe he is open shoving somewhat legit. How close to the bubble are you? This is probably a let it time out kinda fold. I hate having to try and overshove to iso here with so many people left. I could see a shove, but i think it is closer to a fold. It is close thou, bc you never really know what people are doing sometimes with this kinda M, people who get hyper aggro when they get low sometimes, and it is hard to tell until you have seen them open shove a bunch of times.* oh and SB and or CO are pratically all in already, that short and any money already in the pot he is going in, so you may get a free look at what villain is doing

You obviously can't call. It's shove or fold. Bleh. Being a SNG, I probably fold, although I feel a little dirty about it. Interested to hear what others say.

I probably wouldn't fold, I'd think its more likely he has AK/AQ rather than AA-QQ. Then again that's what I think. I just don't see how I can fold here with the blinds as they are.. and it's 7-handed, not 9. I'm probably shoving and hoping he has AJ, but like I said AK-AQ seems to be more likely to me.

Sure AK/AQ is more likely, because there are more combos of those hands than there are QQ/KK/AA.So if we assume the range is TT+, AJ+, then we have:14 combos of hands we crush (TT, AJ)33 combos of hands we flip (AQ/AK, the case JJ)18 combos of hands that crush us (QQ+)With the range like this, we are a small dog. Add to that that this is a SNG not a MTT and we need to worry about cashing first, I think this is a fold.

It really depends if OP feels like taking the chance. There won't be many situations where you will have JJ and a shove with these blinds and the odds of getting another hand to play are much less. Blinds are only getting higher and at least 4 stacks are in a shove range.

nobody thinks this guy could be making this play with a hand worse than TT+ and AJ+? I guess it depends on your read, but I see people shoving 66-TT here, even Ax sometimes. Just because you haven't seen him show anything remarkable doesn't mean he is a tight reg. For some reason I see people spaz out all the time when they are about to fall under their starting stack with the blinds approaching. I think we crush a lot of his range and worst case we might end up flipping. I really don't expect to see an overpair here very often at all. That being said, I shove here, but I'm open to more arguments for a fold. I just don't see any real convincing evidence that we shouldn't play this hand other than we are sitting pretty good and trying to cash is the goal. Seems like everybody here is just agreeing he couldn't ever make this play with a hand outside of that range, which i think is not even close to being true.

Those opinions were based off OP's read. People who play tight all tourney typically don't start open shoving 99- or AT- from UTG. And it's not like Villain was in true desperation mode yet, so I doubt he would be making a play like that UTG. If OP's read is off, then yes of course that changes things. But we gotta go with what we are given.

Yeahhhhhhhhh, but the OP never said anything about the player being tight. He just said he hadn't shown anything "remarkable" That doesn't mean he is a rock, but I do see your point. I can play very loose and not show anything "remarkable" I don't think we really have enough info or a good enough read to limit him to that range. I lean towards the shove, but I'm sure others see it as a fold.Up until this point of the match, villain has not shown anything remarkable, so we could safely assume he's a standard tight reg. I just really have a problem with that thinking.

oh, and to answer your question about ranges...lets say he is a competent reghe is shoving...66+, KQs+, AJs+Now if he is just semi nitty his range can be like...88+,AQs+which will make it closer, but i think it is still a jam
