It sucks that you have to finish top 2 to do more than break even. And what is up with 3rd through 6th place being awarded prize money that is less than the buy in? I imagine it's just so that whenever someone busts out at the final table, the tv can show their "prize money"... even though it is worth less than the buy in. Lame IMO

$600K of the prize money was given out in the prelim tourneys. For example Daniel won $32K for his win last night.

Here's the prize money breakdown for each of the prelim tourneys.

1st - $32,000
2nd - $22,000
3rd - $16,000
4th - $12,000
5th - $8,000
6h - $6,000
7th - $4,000
8th - $0

There was $900k out of a total prize pool of at most $1.2M, that meant there was only up to $300k to distribute amongst the three preliminary matches. Without thinking too hard over it, I assumed the prelim prize money would have negligible impact at the break-even place at the final table. Now that Bob posted the prize breakdown, I looked back at it.

Each player played in two prelim matches, so two finishes in the top 3 would guarantee breaking even with a 5th place final table finish and nearly breaking even at 6th place. That sounds more reasonable now.

There was $300K added so the total prize pool is $1.5 million.

Each player played in 4 of the 6 prelim matches.

Negreanu Gets Maximum Value With Aces
Daniel Negreanu raised to 4,000 preflop with pocket aces, and David Benyamine three-bet to 13,000 with K icon_suit_heart.gif Q icon_suit_spade.gif . Negreanu decided to just call, and the players saw a 5 icon_suit_diamond.gif 8 icon_suit_heart.gif K icon_suit_club.gif flop, putting Benyamine in a precarious position.

Benyamine led out for 13,000, and once again Negreanu played things slowly by just calling.

The turn was the 7 icon_suit_club.gif , and once again Benyamine took the lead thinking he must have the best hand and bet 38,000. Phil Hellmuth in the booth commented that the smart thing for Negreanu to, to extract maximum value would be to smooth call again, which is exactly what Negreanu did.

The river brought the 8 icon_suit_spade.gif , which put Benyamine into deep thought. He slowly counted out chips, stacking them in various positions before finally checking to Negreanu. After sizing up the pot, Negreanu decided on a bet size, 85,000 to be exact. After a minute or so of pondering, Benyamine tossed out the chips to make the call and saw the bad news.

Benyamine is down to 230,000 while Negreanu who battled earlier today to make this final table is now second in chips with 413,000.

Phil Laak Eliminated in 6th Place - ($50,000)
After a raise from Phil Laak preflop, David Benyamine reraised all in. Laak went into the tank for quite some time before putting his 158,000 stack at risk.

When the cards were on their backs and the rest of the players at the table saw Laak's versus Benyamine's they were shocked it took Laak that long to call.

"You should lose just for taking so long to make the call," said Daniel Negreanu.

The flop brought the and Laak let out a shriek of joy. That joy was quickly followed by sadness however when the fell on the turn.

The river didn't bring the miracle Laak was looking for and he was the first eliminated.

Daniel Negreanu raised it up to 30,000 with pocket nines UTG, and Roland De Wolfe moved all in with , leaving 210,000 for Negreanu to call, which he quickly did.

The flop all but locked up the hand for Negreanu coming , and the turn card sealed the deal. The on the river was meaningless, and Roland De Wolfe is now on the rail $70,000 richer.

When Negreanu hit his set, Phil Hellmuth commented that Daniel never loses a race.
