I am in the market for a used SUV or P/U. I dont have any brand loyalty. My price range is in the 15k area. Approximatley how much can I expect to be taken off the sticker concidering I have no trade and will not be financing? Any other advice for dealing with salesmen would also be appreciated.
Today I went to a lot and told them what I was looking for and that i was gonna be checking a few places out. For a basic 08 Ford Ranger they had on there lot the lots owner who was with the salesman told me we could do a deal in the 10k range with me paying cash and nno trade(sticker was 17k). I returned 3 hours later looking to test drive and the salesman said that I was naive if I thought I was gonna get it for 10k and wanted me to agree to 15k(which I slipped up on my first visit and said was my range) before I could even test drive it. Of course i walked.

Never tell them what you want to spend.

With used vehicles it's hard to know how much negotiating room you have because it's impossible to know what the dealer paid for the car.
That said, when I sold cars many moons ago, $3,000 was the usual profit in used cars. Some there was WAY more if they bought the car
right or stole it on a trade. When I bought my truck a couple of years ago I knew one of the sales managers at the lot and he showed
me what they were into it for and it was very close to $3,000.
If you find a car you like go to www.kbb.com and get the blue book values as that will give you a good idea of what the car is worth.
Good luck in your search
Rick

It seems to me that 20% of the asking price is the expected range. Find something around $17,500 ...offer 12k.... settle for around 14K.
I haven't bought a used vehicle in years but that's what I do on new ones. Get a CarFax report too.
edit addition: I would rather have my cave explored than deal with car sales people.... just so ya know.

When shopping for a new car
First you must ask yourself: "Which ones me?"
A cool convertible?
Or an SUV?
Do you know if your credit is whacked?
You could easily end up driving off the lot in a used sub-compact...
You coulda been looking fly and rolling phat
But instead your legs will be sticking to the vinyl whilst your friends are getting laughed at.

Thanks for the pm Randy but I live in Canada which complicates things. I am so busy at work I probally am gonna hold off till mid Febuary so I can put some real time and effort into it now. I have a company vehicle to get what I need till then . I built virtually the same truck on Ford's website and the price qouted there was $17500 for brand new as compared to a 2008 for 15k so I might go that way if nothing else jumps out at me when I get serious.

Hi,
Don't you think that buying a used vehicle may be very close to get re-married. Have someone used, but even though it is the most wanted in the nature. In terms of money quite comfortable , but you require to be aware of the current condition of the used vehicle.
