SuperJon 175
I only caught the end. Seems like it's gonna be pretty similar to his previous show with a few new things. He had Kanye on (performing now with Jay Z and Rhianna). Interviewed him before the performance and it was pretty awkward.
GWCGWC 83
Did he ask kanye about the VMA's thing?
SuperJon 175
Did he ask kanye about the VMA's thing?Yeah. Kanye was just really quiet the entire time. Said he would like to apologize to Taylor in person.Seemed like at one point he was about to start crying, in which case, I would have started laughing. His performance was pretty good. eYank 0
Leno went straight up and asked him "what would your mother think of that?" and there was no response for like 30 seconds, really awkward but Kanye seemed genuine

Stomping on young girls hopes and dreams is pretty much the text book definition of cool.

grocery_mony 9
Having Kanye on after that debacle deffinatly helped his ratings. 18 mill for 10pm is very impressive though. San Diego/Oakland isnt exactly a blockbuster game to be going up against.
grocery_mony 9
Tom Cruise has the personality of a rock.Nice pick having Jim Norton do a segment on occasion. Jay moves to 10 and gets edgier, Conan moves to 11:30 and gets uptight.

BigDMcGee 3,367
Do you seriously think that Jay's target audience cares about Kayne West?Yes. He was the news story de jour, and he assaulted the virture of that nice, white teenage girl country singer, so I imagine his interview was a draw to many people who didn't give a damn about his music. I hate to totally disagree with you and all... but I have seen neverending commercials for Jay's show for the last month and I haven't seen one commercial mention that Kayne was going to be on. I only ever saw them plug Seinfeld. Jay's audience, which HAS to have a median age of say 48+, would never watch MTV, let alone even know who Kayne West was. I didn't even know he was on until later in the night after football was over and it was on Drudge... and I'm in the semi-young, kind-of-up-on pop culture group. I'm not saying that it's not possible, but I just think that Kayne's appearance had minimal impact on the audience numbers. (But Jay did get really lucky that he was a guest on the first night, and probably snagged an extra 1 mil or so audience... so good for him)

But I think Jay's target audience would care, if they watch the news, listen to celebrity gossip sites. People may be wholely unaware of his music, but profoundly hate him, because of his comments about George Bush. After that time, he's become sort of a symbol for a great deal of white america for what's wrong with hip hop, even if they know nothing about hip hop or him. So if Jay's audience watches 24 hours news stations, any gossip media at all, or have the internet at all, then I suspect they would care. I don't know how much ( if at all) it moved the needle for the show, but that's not really the point I was making.
