Moving up in limits - When?

There was a thread yesterday regarding how large a bankroll should be for different limits. It got me thinking of another question I have been asking myself.What does it mean to be "killing a game" and when should you think about moving up?I have been playing 5/10 limit and have been earned about 1.8 BB per hour for the last 4 months. I don't consider myself to be "killing the game" yet, although I am doing better than the average 5/10 player I see at the casino. But I would think that "killing the game" would be more on the magnitude of 4 or 5 BB/hour. Maybe that's crazy - let me know.I am not sure what earning rate I should be looking to reach before moving up to the 10/20 game. Also, if I go to the 10/20 game, what should be the trigger for moving back down - i.e., if I am only making 1/2 BB per hour there, should I stick with it or should I go back to 5/10 and work on my game some more?I know the answer to all these questions is "it depends", but if anyone has any more specific opinions, I would appreciate them. :-)

I would suggest moving up only when your poker bankroll is at the appropriate size for that next limit. Maybe even a little oversize depending on your style. As for the cue to dropping down, I would say either If you identify a new weakness in your game that you can't seem to resolve, or your bankroll looks as if it is going to be wiped out(you are not recording winning sessions much and are losing, losing, losing. If you are making profit, but at a lower relative rate, I would stick with it, and see if you can improve. This is all if you are not relying on poker as your sole income. If it is, I'd recommend a MUCH larger bankroll.

Thanks for the input ahosang.When I do move up, I certainly plan on building my bankroll first. But right now, it's not growing, because I am taking my winnings as profits. Any right now, poker is not my main source of income - not even close actually. Maybe some day, but right now, the most I play is weekends (Fri night, Sat, Sun) and maybe one other night during the week.Anyone else's thoughts on my questions would be great as well.

Scince you do not depend on poker as an income this gives you some flexibilty. Ok the recommended "bankroll" for a game is 300 BB. At 5/10 thats 3000 and 10/20 is 6000.well why not save to about 4500 and take a shot. If you lose you drop back down to 5/10 if you go on a little tear you are at 10/20 to stay.its not 100% but its an idea.Cheers,Tyler
