cdipierr 0
Villain is passive. He's 15/9 over about 115 hands, hasn't really been involved at the table to this point. The lol betting on the turn is because lately I can't get people to pay off big bets /w my big hands. I'm running 24/3 at this table.

I'm running 24/3 at this table.I would call 15/9 tight but not necessarily passive unless you could back it up with a low AF and some stats about his tendencies for betting/raising flops and/or turns. 115 hands is a small sample but it could give you some insight. Regarding the turn betting I still think its better for you to put in raises in amounts you know are better than stooping to the poor plays people make at these limits. If you've been having trouble getting value out of your big hands maybe you've been playing too passively in general or maybe just been getting unlucky where nobody gets much of anything when you have big hands. 24/3 sounds like you need to raise prf a lot more, over how many hands at the table were you running that way? cdipierr 0
Cooler or not, what can we beat? He's BB, so 78, 73, 83 ... but we can't beat 33 or 88 ... is there really any other hand in this guy's range that he'd play like this? So we're ahead of 3, behind 2, doesn't seem to make it an insta-shove. But why should I be playing this faster on the flop? I want other people in ... 783 isn't terribly drawy, so why not slowplay here?

If you build the pot up more on the flop its easier to get it in on the turn. And thats probably my goal here any day, sucks if you were coolered but I hope you didn't fold this. Oh since you asked I think you can include A8, 99, maybe even TT in villain's range. Remember how weak your hand looks the way you've played it.
Temporary Nuts 1
You're playing at a level where top pair is the nuts. You want to get value before scare cards hit that kill your action. Slowplaying in multiway pots is generally just -EV. Besides, you called a bet, and called a raise, this is more than just slowplaying, this is overkill. We want to win big pots, not a bunch of tiny bets. Sure, slowplaying may extract another 15 cents from another caller, but over time you will crush your action against hands that are willing to felt this flop, but are going to shut down when the turn is a K or A or 9 or 6 or anything that could scare them. You're getting extra small bets to kill your future big action and this is just lighting money on fire. Will you fold everyone out? Sure, but that doesn't matter if we still get huge payouts even a small % of the time. Then on the turn you guys just start climbing the minraise treadmill which is entirely LOL. Really, this hand is played really really really bad please do not try to defend it. If you do you're just going to continue having more huge leaks in your game. Trying to fold flopped sets that turn into boats is not where you have leaks I promise.
cdipierr 0
Ok, this hand aside, I want to ask about the "top pair is the nuts" belief that seems to permeate thinking here. I've only played a few thousand hands, but no one is just giving away $ at this level. Maybe I've been unlucky not to have people willing to stack off with QJ on a Q high flop, but I practically never get value out of big hands. Flopped sets, made flushes, etc. If someone bets something like $0.25, and I raise to $1.25, it's always folded. Maybe this is too small a sample set, but I think it's a lot rockier than people make it out to be. By far the place I've made the most $ is a big preflop pair vs. 99 or TT. People will overvalue those hands, but once a scary board hits, they're done.
SwolyswoND 1
No, we can never fold here. You can't limit a villain's range to exactly 4 combos. Ship it in on the turn and be really really happy about it. Tons of naked 3s are in this guy's range. And if you don't get value from your big hands at this level, it's because youre not betting and/or raising enough.
TrueAce13 18
kl;jasdfklsdjaf;l ffs I love how you are trying to justify a fold here. YOUR PLAYING $5NL!!! any set is usually the nuts! cdipierr 0
In any event, I'm not trying to "justify a fold". It never crossed my mind during the hand, and I shipped. Guy time banked and called with 33. But I was trying to see if this should have been "obvious" and thus a fold. A buy-in swing at this level is large over my sample set. A buy-in swing at this level is large over my sample set.Even if we think his range is purely full houses or better, the fact that he's in the BB means it's entirely likely he can have 83/73, both of which we beat. I don't agree with Swoly that naked 3s are in his range though, I just don't think a 15/9 check/raises a bet and call on this flop with a naked 3.Bottom line, 83/73 aren't folding, so we can value shove the turn hoping he has one of those two hands and not 88/33. But let's say you raised to .15 preflop and villain called from the sb, bb folds, the pot is .35On the flop you rate your hand to be best, sb donks .25 like you said. You want to raise to .75, not .50 or 1.25Raising too little loses a lot of your value and give villains good odds.Raising too much blows people out of the pot.
rrumsey 0
agree with james but i like a preflop raise you have good position and dead money and as long as button folds you have position to milk it when you connect on your set, but if they seem to like call then im ok with this bc at worst we have 2nd best postion and a hand we can defend with if SB or BB stabs at this. Guess thats read dependant but void of reads on the table i think this line makes flop betting and turn betting simple and all but rules out 3's so your only losing to 8's and you can shove and once in a blue moon run into a better boat
