July 1 Free Agent Frenzy

Recommended Posts

I figured maybe better to keep it all in one place, since the Mtl-NYR trade seemed to be going on in 4 different threads. :club: Looking forward to doing some work at home while I watch the silly season festivities. Its awesome they make this day on a holiday! Any predictions?

I find it funny that the habs have only started negotiating with Komisarek and Kovalev. I guess Koivu is not going to get signed, but Tanguay asked to start contract negotiations weeks ago and tha Habs said they had other priorities. I feel like we could have signed him at good value pre-July 1st, but now he's going to receive offers and his value will likely increase. I really want to keep Tanguay, he's our best winger. Maybe Gainey wants to try and snag a bonified scorrer off the market.

for your sake, I hope gainey knows what he's doing. like zach said, seems like you're flirting with taylor hall territory here.

my best guess is that Gainey has been forced to take a wait and see approach due to possible Lecavalier trade OR Sedins signings. I think Tanguay is a fallback option for him. Im not really sure you get guys for that much cheaper on June 1 than you do on July 1, unless he gets a stupid offer from somone overpaying him, and by then its up to Gainey to decide if Tanguay is worth overpaying to keep.

I've had faith in Gainey from day 1. Once he fired Carboneau I've started to have doubts. Now that July 1st is here and we've signed zero of our free agents I'm very worried. Buying free agents is expensive and now we've just added Gomez, granted the cap space is there but we have a lot of contracts to dish out. There's a lot of work to do until September.but this Taylor Hall talk is nonsense. We have Price in nets, we're making the playoffs. Open bet; Even money, 20$, to the first taker, Habs make the playoffs.

you want Serge's cell number? :club: I agree with you, I dont think they are anywhere near that bad. And more importantly, the holes they have, I have a lot of confidence in Gainey to fill. And as much as I dont like his style, JMartin will help this team a lot.

JayBo w/Calgary for 5 years worth $6.6M per year~TSN
They've got 16 players signed and 5 million in cap left. Their offence is going to be hurting without Cammalleri, Boyd, and Bertuzzi. They certainly don't have a whole lot of money left to pay for more help up front.Moss, Glencross, and Nystrom are going to have to step up their games if we're going to see any scoring anywhere outside of the top line.

moss got 19 or 20 last season, so I do think he's capable of stepping up. you're right, though..

so wait, it's midnight?
I thinks its noon tomorrow that the madness starts.
as far as I know, the official time is now 12noon.
I beleive they can start negotiating at midnight but nothing is announced till noon. Made for Canadian tv. Not 100% sure on this but I seem to remember that being the case last year.

It's certainly not just you.
heatley's signed through 13/14 on a front-loaded deal that averages to about $7m according to nhlnumbers.com.yyyyeah, I'd say that's an epic win for Edm.

The habs give up higgins mcdonough and valentenko for gomez and his poisonous contract, and then edmonton is going to get heatly for that? my god. on life tilt

I mean, the heatley acquisition could bite Edmonton in the ass if he demands a trade a year or two down the line. Burke's comments on the matter were absolutely spot-on, IMO.
