The other day when I clicked on Animal Planet to watch this show, I was all excited, I thought I was going to get to see Orcas attacking Blue Whales, Grey and Humpbacks in a battle royal, or even possibly a sperm whale biting the head of a Beluga. Much to my dismay, this was not the case.
Instead a boat full of gays and people who couldn't get a real job, cruising the Antarctic on an antiquated boat, with a captain who probably couldn't navigate a ski boat across a small lake, chasing down Japanese whaling boats trying to sabotage them so they can't LEGALLY commence with Whaling.
It is amazing that these guys have not been killed for multiple reasons:
1. The obvious incompetence of the captain who tried to steer them through a mine field of icebergs and inability to remember Port and Starboard.
2. The Whaling ships they do catch they try to throw off course, throw smoke bombs and other explosives on the deck, and if that fails possible ram them.
I am amazed that one of these whaling ships has not loaded a 50 caliber rifle on the deck and just lit one of these boats up. I cannot see how in any rational world court that would not be self defense.

It was my understanding that the legality of the whaling is dubious. Something about Japan being a signatory to a ban on commercial whaling but they're getting around it by posing as research vessels.
Other than that pretty spot on. The thing I was amazed at was how reckless and belligerent they behave and then act all shocked and outraged when the whaling vessel reacts in kind.
I'd feel much safer at sea with this guy at the helm:

Hank's tenure at Soulsuckers, INC, LLC, DBA TBD, had not been long, but it had been distinguished... By drunkenness, hair-trigger violence, and a total lack of performance. I would call it a steady decline in performance, but that would imply that he performed at one point in time. In fact he had not. He was drunk.

the captain was supposedly shot in the chest while wearing a flack jacket by a hidden sniper from one of the whaling boats last season, but it looked more like an obviously staged publicity/ratings stunt.

Oh, speaking of the captain, to me he seems to ooze sleaze. Like the type of guy that's one inquiry away from going to prison for pedophilia.

That's just sad (the publicity stunt). If by 'sniper' you and they actually mean a man with a sniper rifle, it seems unlikely to me that a civilian flak jacket could stop a bullet from a sniper rifle. Or was it just a random dude with an AK who they termed a sniper cuz he managed to hit somebody? And of course I realize that the whole thing was likely staged as you say - I'm just wondering how well they staged it.
Regarding the show - I think I watched like the first 2 episodes a couple years ago, and they were terrible. Back then it was on the Discovery channel. Same show though, right?

To reiterate what Hank said, what they are doing is not actually legal. They pose as research ships, which is legal, then over fish the whales and sell the parts, which was the illegal part.
While I agree with the Captain's and the fags on the boats cause, they are the biggest bunch of misfit idiots to ever sail the oceans. Last season was just hilarious when the Captain made them board a ship to give a letter to the japanses captain saying it was illegal to hunt whale in these waters. The japanese crew took the two idiots and held them as hostages. Turned into a big media thing which the captain wanted. They f'in boarded another persons ship, that is illegal but they tried to turn it around on the japanese for holding them hostage so countries had to get together and waste time trying to get the hostages back and everything to be settled so no war started. They are the biggest idiots.
Then the Captain went to sleep and put one of the other people in charge who clearly had no idea what the hell he was doing and they almost lost like 7 volunteers who went on a night raiding run and forgot to bring the f'in radio with them. The show is awesome just to watch these idiots almost kill themselves week after week.

I think someone with some creativity could make a pretty funny sitcom out of this Ala McHales navy.

What they really need is a boatload of Bart Simpsons.
“We had all the momentum. We were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look west, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark, that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.” —Raoul Duke, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

Disappointed.
I figured this would be a show about those fat ghetto women beating each other up.
At least you led with "it's not what you think".
