Villian only has a half stack, so by the river he only has 20. I would check here and hope he bets something small that I can call.If he were deeper maybe I check the turn and look to CR?I sometimes raise this preflop OOP if I am running over the table.

Does betting over fold a better hand, or get called by a worse one?

I can't see him with top 2 or a low set in this hand. Most likely a draw, which looks like it got there.

That's a pretty rough flop for a bare set because he could easily have a straight/flush combo draw there, giving him an easy call on both streets. Or he could have a spade draw on the flop and picked up a diamond draw on the turn too. I'd say either of those is far more likely than a bare straight draw here. I'd probably check-call a smallish bet and check-fold to a large bet.

if the player isn't a tard this could be a nice spot for a slightly larger than half pot size bet which you never want to get called (you're kinda hoping he had a straight draw but if he did have a flush draw he had a straight draw to go with it and his flush draw isnt to the nuts so your bet will look like a value bet and he will fold. it will also keep you from having to call the psb that any decent player is smacking you across the face with the right mix of bluffs and value bets where its hard not to call. i guess its like if you feel you have to call him make a bet like that and in the end you lose less this way). against most players you can probably check/fold that river.
