I saw it and did not think it was that great. For an ugly old woman, sure it's good compared to other ugly old women. Compared to professional and trained singers? Very mediocre. I don't get what the big deal is with her, except the whole backstory bullshit.
We are all so complicated, and then we die. We are a subject one day, with our vanities, our loves, our worries, and then one day, abruptly, we become nothing but an object, an absolutely disgusting pile of shit. We pass very quickly from one stage to the next. It's very bizarre. It will happen to all of us, and fairly soon too. We become an object you can handle like a stone, but a stone that was someone.

I saw this yesterday, it's amazing. Very touching. They should set her up with the opera guy from a few seasons ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxOytYLlhiQ

Agreed. It's not news to me that some ugly people can sing. Hasn't anyone ever been to a karaoke bar?

Hi,

I'm too cool to appreciate a heartwarming story that is popular. At this point I'd like to prove how cool I am by naysaying one of the best show biz stories in a couple of years. Please notice that I am cool.

Thank you for your time.

PS -- Did I mention that I am really cool, which makes me way better than the rest of you?

this show seems all about finding not the prettiest face to look at but an amazing voice. Where on American Idol a cute face will always last way damn too long.

She and opera man should hook up

Sorry. What I meant to say is that she's a rather good singer whose talent is amplified by the fact that she's so unattractive, old, and weird. It totally blew my mind that she could produce anything in this world of any beauty. As soon as she began to sing, I could suddenly see her as a real person--well, let's say a troll with a soul.

I don't get it. Usually I think LG is a little harsh but I think she is actually right on this one. If this woman was 15 years younger and attractive this post would not be here. But because she was old and unattractive that makes her being able to sing (which if you didn't already know, there are many people ugly, young, old, pretty who can sing in this world) more amazing? I don't get that. This is only a story because too many people think ugly people are useless. So yeah, I guess I will join the ranks of being cool and better than everyone else because I don't feel like being surprised an ugly woman can sing....

Edit: I agree she has talent in case that point was missed in my other ranting. I just don't see what makes her so special compared to the millions of other people in the world. Oh yeah, duh, she's ugly.

I think the biggest thing here, is that the lady is singing in British and LadyGrey has astute ear for it since it is her home country. That is why she is confused by the American singers on American Idol, because they are singing in American, which to her untrained her might sound really good when it actually is not. I will hold judgment until I can get the song properly translated.

Was there more to her backstory than being old and ugly?

I don't think American Idol is a good comparison since American Idol is interested in finding a pop star, which means being young and attractive is part of the package.

Really? We need to explain why this story is popular to people?

It's because we all know people like this, or have personally felt like this. This woman has apparently had a hard life, is not particularly strong on social graces, and does not have the look that popular culture seems to crave (at the expense of talent). This is a woman who has a great talent, and had a dream that has been on hold, probably because there are a lot of dickheads in the world. She has probably been underestimated at every step of her life, but kept the dream somewhere inside and remained cheerful and optimistic. And here, she risks her pride and dignity, to take a shot at showing the world her talent, and blows everyone away.

You have to be pretty damn cynical about the world to not be touched by this. And I should know, because I'm about the most cynical person I know, and even I couldn't pretend that this is not a great, heart-warming story.

And anyone who wants to pick at a few technical vocal errors at this point is just too pathetic to continue living. How angry do you have to be at life and the world? The woman has a natural talent that the world is lucky to have discovered, and hopefully will now get the coaching and exposure to make the most of it.

I don't deny that it isn't a feel good story. But that doesn't change the fact that the only reason it is a story is because people put people like her low on the totem pole. There are many attractive people who have had a hard life and have dreams but they are scared to take that first step.

I don't know how to make my point more clear than I guess this...

The only reason people care is because people think ugly, out of the ordinary people have nothing to offer. If people DIDN'T think that way then this would be a non-issue. Would a post be made if a 22 year old blond big tittied bombshell came on stage and sang well? No. Well maybe but for the reason of her looks. Maybe that blonde bombshell had a hard life and was shy and even though hot, she had a bad self esteem. Would she get the same attention? Maybe but again not for the same reasons as an old odd dog of a woman.

So for me, it doesn't surprise me that an ugly woman can sing. I have seen many ugly women sing well. Good for her and good for them. I hope she succeeds but I guess I hope she succeeds for being a good singer, not an ugly good singer.

Edit: and it is obvious why it is popular. An old ugly odd woman got up on stage and did something well. That is why it is popular, not because of her story.
