I absolutely loved this movie. It was a movie about post-college kids working in a crappy theme park in the late 1980's. It's basically a quirky boy-meets-girl comedy. The thing that makes it so good is how smart it is, how realistic it comes across, and how much respect the filmmakers seem to have for the audience's intelligence. There are so many generic pitfalls that this sort of young 20s comedies/romances can fall into, and this movie worked hard to dodge cliche's and avoid mundane plot lines. It was funny, but not overwhelmingly so such that we lose track of the characters. Also, the soundtrack was amazing. The score is written by Yo La Tengo, and the movie itself is filled with fantastic music from the 70s and 80s, as well as a lot of great music references. So, if you have any interest in these movies at all, check it out. You should really like it.

I saw it last night too and thought it was great. I worked at the real Adventureland in Farmingdale, NY which is where the writer based to movie off of. But this is one of the best romantic comedies but not a chick flick I've seen in a while.

We just got back from seeing it.. I really enjoyed it too :)They hit the nail on the head with the behind the scenes stuff that goes on in amusement parks with the staff. We were bored to tears but always had some really fun stuff happening after hours :club:

Some friends and I were thinking about going tonight but the weather here sucks bad and I was lukewarm on seeing this anyway. After reading this thread, I think I changed my mind.

Is this movie based on the real adventureland in Des Moines?

It was filmed at Kennywood in Pittsburgh as well as some other locations near my parents house in the burgh. The movie is set in 1987 so obviously they needed vehicles from that era to film. Low and behold they found my families 1987 Chevy Chevette and paid us a couple hundred to use it one of the sets for a week or so. I was going to see it anyway but I'm glad it sounds like it's actually a good movie.chevrolet-chevette-9.jpg

The movie is based off of Adventureland in Farmingdale, NY where the writer of the movie worked when he was younger. They filmed it in Kennywood bc it was too expensive to film it in NY with the tax laws and stuff and the Aland in NY has changed since he worked there

i liked it, but i felt like

the whole thing about the dad's drinking problem and the bottle in the car being his i thought was coming to some sort of head and then he's just suddenly on a bus to new york? that annoyed me a little, as well as why he actually went to new york. did he go just for her? if his parents couldn't pay for a vacation how were they going to pay for his grad school in the first place? i don't know, i feel like there was about 5 minutes of falling action missing that would have wrapped it up a little better, but overall i still liked it.

My thinking was he went to NY with no money just to be with her. He had no money because he drank his dad's alcohol but didn't blame it on him. Not sure why that never came up but thats what I thought
