I've been playing poker for years now, but have never really taken it seriously. It sounds stupid, but I've always had a decent job and haven't cared when I lose money playing poker. If I use proper bankroll requirements, I know I can be a winning player.

I plan on playing 6 max NLHE cash games only. After looking around here.... it looks like 30 BI seems to be the number.

So......here is my plan. Deposit 50 bucks and play .01-.02 and buy in for 4 dollars each time. I realize that's only starting with 12 BI's, but I'm confident I can succeed at that level. When I get to 600, I'll then BI for 20 at ..05-.1. When I get to 1500, I'll BI for 50 at .25-.50..etc, etc.

I plan on only playing on 2 tables at once and spending maybe 10 hours a week playing. So my question is..........who out there has done something similar to this? Will it take years for me to move up at that rate? A few months? I guess what I'm looking for are stories from those of you out there that have done something very similar to this and the progress you made/making.

Thanks,

Hartman

doesn't sound stupid at all, I'd say most players are recreational

If you have a real job then I suggest you deposit more than $50 and play $10 nl (deposit $200-300 to get started). Otherwise, you'll be playing the lowest of the low limits, and it'll take you quite a while to move up, whereas at 10nl you can move up fairly quickly and the level of play is still horrendous. I built a roll on Full Tilt awhile ago and made it to 25nl in < 20k hands. Withdrew, and now I'm on AP doing the same thing in a more disciplined manner (I would play 25nl w/out the roll since I was used to that stake on FTP, also took stupid shots at 50nl).

also, get rakeback.

SNG"s and microstakes MTT's are the way to go to build a new bankroll imo.

I started poker with a $50 bankroll. Started on $4NL until I had ~$150. Moved to $10NL. played some $2 and $5 sngs to mix things up. Moved up to $25NL when I had about $450. Currently playing $50 6-max with almost a $2000 bankroll. Took about 15 months, the last 5-6 of which I have really been working to improve my game.

For the most part I switched back and forth between 6-max and full ring, usually changing after running bad for a while. Play 6max pretty much exclusively now, don't like full ring.

As you can see, I used about a 20 buy in rule, although generally couldn't wait to move up and cheated a bit. I don't intend to have a go at $100NL any time soon though, still feel I can be a lot better first.

I much prefer cash games to sngs even tho I know a lot of you built up your roll quicker playing these.

I'm going to stick with the 50 dollar deposit for now and grind my teeth awhile. If I find that it's taking me too long to move up....I'll just deposit more money and start playing .05-.1.

Thanks for all the replies

Unless you really prefer tournaments to cash games, I think its better in the long run to learn how to play cash games.

A winning cash game player can do well in tournament, but it's much harder for a tourny reg to do well in cash games.

The speed at which you move up really relies on your dedication to the game and your dedication to improving. The quicker you find your weaknesses and fix them, the faster you can improve. I started with ~4.00 in freeroll winnings just over 2 years ago and am now a winning MSNL player (and have been for over a year). The first year was difficult and didn't result in huge monetary results, but I improved a lot and developed the fundamentals necessary to beat higher stakes games. No one will be able to give you a concrete answer as to how long it will take as that is entirely up to you. It will help you a lot to focus less on results and where you are in your development, and instead use that energy to constantly analyze your game and correct mistakes.
