had alot of responses already so i'll post results, i folded and he showed 99 and flopped a set. so i guess it was the right fold, but i literally sat there with my mouse on the call button for 30 seconds. i think he does this with pocket pairs and like A9 +... or is that too wide of a range?

Reads or stats on the CO was what I was needing. I mean if he had been quiet most of the tournament then raised all-in here its easy fold, but if he had been spewing like crazy up and down, then we can justify calling easier. With no reads I think its really close, but usually only a slight favorite if we are ahead.

I dont have PT or any stats program, and I was facebooking/FCP'ing while i was playin too so really no reads lol. Probably a leak in my game..

I call, 88 should be a slight favorite against his range and there's over 400 extra in the pot.fwiw, the fact that he had 99 doesn't mean it was the right fold.
Do you call with 77 here and what do you think CO's range is? Something like: 44+,A8s+,KJs+,A8o+,KJo+?

Some numbers (because I like numbers :club: ):There's 1795 in the pot.We need to put in 1265 to call. The main pot is 990.The side pot is 2070.Let's put CO on a top 15% hand - 77+, A7s+, K9s+, QTs+, JTs+, ATo+, KTo+, QJo. (I guess that's still on the tight side?)Then using pokerstove, we have a 48.6% equity in the side pot, meaning about $1006.Moreover, let's put UTG on a top 50% hand. (Though he probably should shove ATC here.)Then we have a 35.7% equity in the main pot, meaning about $353So, in total, we get back an EV of $1359 on our $1265 call, which should be plenty to call here.If you change the numbers to a top 10% hand for CO and ATC for UTG, you get a roughly even money situation. That range for UTG is really way too tight though. Since we're basically playing for chip EV here (losing the pot will only cost about 1/3 of our stack, so doesn't hurt our chances of getting in the money too much) I think it's a clear call.

I would be strongly disposed toward a call here, but then I don't tend to do as well in STTs as I do in 3-table SnGs or in 180s, so maybe I am too willing to take unnecessary risks to get chips I don't need while risking chips I do need!

Well the key here is if you make the call and win, you are in great shape and figure to do very well. If you lose, you are still in good shape and still in no danger really with 23bb. If you fold, well, no harm there either, but I think the fact that you are slightly ahead of CO's range and extra cash in the pot, I'd be more game to make the call.

So if you were shorter stacked, you wouldn't call? I'd almost feel like I need the chips more in that case (though on the other hand, I'd also be more at risk as you say). Assuming the two villains have the same stacks in any event, and the blinds and number of players remaining are the same, I have a hard time envisioning a stack size where I'd want to fold.

Though you're far from the money and have a good chip position without this pot, you're ahead of much of the 2nd shover's range and you still have a relatively competitive stack if you lose the hand. Lean towards call.

Precisely. If it's a close spot and you stand to bust if you lose, I'd prefer to fold and battle on.

I can see that point, but what about the fact that if you're shorter stacked, a big pot like this is just the medicine you need?
