You have to bet the flop. You have top pair/ top kicker, but you're vulnerable to lots of draws. I think trying a check raise is risky here, but check/calling is even worse.

I Agree.FYI in your next Strat post, don't post the outcome 'till you've had some responses.

and if you're gonna come out firing on the turn, bet more than $5 into about a $13 pot. Bet atleast 10, but I would bet more toward 13 to 15.

Preflop is a re-raise or fold situation. Calling a large raise out of position, even with a great hand like AK is bad play.I think check-raise on the flop is best, as he almost certainly hit SOMETHING on that flop. Even an underpair would bet here, as they think they are only losing to 5 cards. AJ/AQ/JQ would bet on the draw/steal, JK and QK would certainly look to protect their hand, and the only hand you truly need to worry about, TA, could easily CHECK as they are looking to trap YOU.Based off the play, after he bets $3, I would re-raise to about $13-$15, and JA would have to fold there, knowing it's drawing to 4 decent and 3 mediocre outs.Your fate was sealed on the turn, but I also agree that in general if you wanted to follow that route, a bet of at least 3/4 pot was necessary, possibly even over pot just to drive out a bare jack.
