How Do You Guys Do It?

Recommended Posts

I played in the $3 rebuy last night and got down to the final three tables, busting 23rd. I played for 8 hours and fell short of decent money. I cashed for $84. That was a long tournament without amazing results as far as cashing goes. It was fun to go that deep but it made me wonder how you big tournament players can play so many tournaments. It's highly time consuming. I know a lot of you play all the majors on Sunday. Do those of you who do play poker for a living or is it a weekend deal? It's so time consuming. Very impressive for those of you who do it. I don't know that there's a point or question other than how do you manage to invest that much time on a consistent basis? Curious as to your thoughts for anybody that plays mostly tournaments over ring games. I'm really a ring game player myself so it's interesting.

I play full-time about 5 days/week and generally 4 or 5 of those days end in me being very depressed and so close to a huge win but just not quite there.
I can't play a high volume of mtts for that reason. It's so disappointing and depressing. I started off trying to be a mtt grinder and had a lot of success in smallish stakes, but I've never ran good at the end of anything that would make a difference in my life. I've been so close to large scores so many times. Maybe if one race had gone differently at one point I'd still be doing it instead of grinding LHE atm.

For those that don't like or get frustrated by large MTTs you should play 180, 90 or 45 man SNGs. They don't take as long. I usually don't play large MTTs that often or as many as some of the other players do, so I just usually grind out 45man SNGs that only take a few hours.

Yeah, Unlimited rebuys for the 1st hour then you can add on for 3$ for 2000 chips at the end of the hour.Usually get about 3000 people entering more or less

Playing a high volume of tournaments and maintaining a healthy mindset requires a certain type of personality (sadomasochistic? :club: ), one which most people do not have. Like Wandigo said, most nights end in extreme disappointment; even finishing 4th or whatever leaves you feeling like you failed somehow, even if that 4th place finish netted you a decent amount of money (see: bk's lft). The key is to somehow keep a perspective on the amount of variance involved in tournaments and stay patient, all while maintaining a high level of confidence. yeah, it's very frustrating to play MTTs full time. Sooo often you're close to that huge score and don't get it. Also, you have to abide by the 'BKiCe rule'. He says that there are some tournaments you are destined to win if you play good poker, so to make sure you win the tournaments your destined to win, you have to play good poker 100% of the time. Because if you fukc in that one tournament you were supposed win, that could well be the difference between a winning year and a losing year (or a slightly winning year and a super fantastic winning year). So obviously playing your A-game all the time, in tournaments where 95%+ of the time you'll be disappointed, is pretty sick. God looking at it this way, why does anyone play MTTs?(btw, I am mostly an MTT player)

Superuser. You were just clever enough to allow yourself to finish 2nd instead of 1st, made it look less obvious.
