Wings have like 15M left in space. Ridiculous. Poor off season for them. Not much else to grab. Hope the trade deadline works better.

I do that during the season, but in summertime there's nothing else to do but read up on everyone else's prospects and finances and free agents and whatnot.

Fixed for Leafs fans.

Apparently! Seems like a poor deal though. Lots of money for a guy with effort questions - so he'll put up big numbers with Staal, and then they have to hope he resigns with them, though even than, it'll be at market value. If Rutherford's comments were all a part of how they'll treat Semin - force him to answer the effort questions, rather than baby him...I like it. And Carolina is not a max-cap team, so I don't really care if they pay him $7 or $7M.It's an easy signing to like, and I'm not sure Carolina reaps a lot of benefit from it, but they'll be a fun team to watch this year. If I was a fan of the team, I'd be happy today. Plenty of worse ways to spend $7M, especially without a long-term commitment. And I often suspect teams won't re-sign guys they signed on short deals, and am often wrong.
Holy negative nancy.Semin is good defensively, plays the PK, former 40 goal scorer... I don't think it's a secret he wasn't happy in Washington, especially once Hunter got there. He may not be the most consistent player, but pure goal scorers rarely are, they tend to be streaky. You can't teach his skill level, though. He has a top 5 shot in the NHL, without a doubt. He'll be just fine in Carolina. Like Arp said, they weren't even at the floor with most of their roster signed, so the money is fairly irrelevant (again, why would we care what the owners feel is right to spend out of their pockets???), AND it's a one year deal. There's literally no hockey-related risk.

I agree! I meant that on the surface it was a poor deal (likely overpay in terms of AAV), but going deeper into, I like a lot about it. And the money part is irrelevant because it isn't my money, Carolina isn't at the cap, and for a one-year deal late in FA system, it probably isn't preventing them from doing anything else with the same dollars. So is Semin good defensively or an inconsistent pure goal scorer?

Semin is a great signing. About $2m more than he is worth, but on a 1 year deal, cap hit is almost irrelevant, since they obviously had the room to sign him. He still has elite skill, it's a no brainer. I wish the Leafs had signed him.

But, the cap hit seems to make it only a 1 year deal. If they want to resign him, can they really pay him less? (Unless they structure a longer term deal, I guess).

Sure they can, depends on how well he plays. If he scores 30-40 goals, he's probably worth the $7 million. The Canes have the flexibility to decide what to do with him if it does happen.

Carolina gonna make the playoffs this year...

Carolina was one of the best teams down the stretch last year, once they started getting it together under Muller. I think they've got a very good shot. I imagine Florida falls off a little, and Washington rebounds a bit, so it should be between the Caps and Canes for that division. It's too bad for Florida, because I like rooting for them to succeed, just to see if my hypothesis about them gaining some fans could ever come true, but they'd need to consistently win. Maybe adding Huberdeau and others will be a good boost.

There are 2 things working against Carolina next year. 1. The defence. I don't like it as it currently stands. They need to add as good of a solid, hard-nosed D as they can find, a shutdown guy if possible. It's weak. 2. IF Cam Ward can stay healthy. He's had some issues last few years, and they have very little behind him, and Boucher is gonna be out the first few months as well. If Cam gets hurt, they're screwed. Also, I could see Tampa rebounding huge, and I can also see Florida having another good year. I don't discount anyone in that division actually. Car should be a playoff team, but who knows. Some guy I know even sent me a text the other day saying the Leafs would beat them next year anyway, even with all these upgrades. I'm debating asking him to bet on it, but my history is bad with this guy. :club:

I love Muller as a coach. I would've bet on Carolina to win the division (at appropriate odds) even without Semin. Go 'Canes!

The Carolina Hurricanes have called up Jared Staal from the AHL..He will most likely be in the lineup against the Rangers.

Meaning all 4 brothers will be in the building. Unfortunately Marc is still injured.

Jared won't play another NHL game after this season. He's barely an AHL player.

Ya. Sounds like a favour to the cornerstones of the franchise, maybe build some goodwill with Marc too?

Rutherford is the ultimate players GM, if there is such a thing.

Could actually see him connecting for a goal, just out of chemistry and adrenaline, but yeah, he's not good.
