im still not sold that many of these people that get these big online scores are winners when it comes to the live game, which, by the way, is real poker.

I love the game of poker for the competition, the psychology, the never-ending quest to improve, the advanced and sometimes minute complexities not everyone sees when they play, and the enjoyment of succeeding after giving all your energy to reach a goal that may at first seem unattainable but that you find a way to make it possible.

I think more and more people have gotten on the "I'll just call and outplay them post flop" bandwagon even though they have no chance in hell of outplaying anybody.

speak for yourself

one time king1305 was playing me HU in a super deepstacked sng...

He raised on the button with Ace Ace, I called out of the bb with J9ss.. The Floop came JJ9. I attempted a tarp and king1305 soul read me and checked behind. The turn came an offsuit deuce and I led for the pot. King1305 Flatcalled and the river brought the 4th J. I put king1305 on a hand like xx-xx and figured hed valuebet/bluff the river into my quads...

I checked and he checked behind with AA

If he didnt outplay me that hand then idk what outplaying someone is...

That being said, if sean can do it...anyone can

Terrible article. Not only does he fail to appreciate the nuanced distinction between selectively aggressive and stupidly aggressive, but he seems to base his whole argument on the fact that the top 8 chipstacks of the September 9 describe their ME play as tight and cautious. But note the "about the author" at the end:

Ran many marathons. Undefeated racer of elephants (3-0 lifetime.) Czechoslovakian Linguist USAF/NSA. Married. 2 step-children, 3 grandsons.

Notice how the word "poker" doesn't appear anywhere? Apparently he could write a book about elephant racing, though.

What about "luck"? There is a huge card-catching luck factor here that isn't really quantifiable. Is there skill in avoiding conflict? Yes, to a certain extent. But you can never, ever control the cards that come when a guy calls a 3x BB raise and then a 2/3 pot c-bet and hits his 2 outer on the turn. That is luck, fate, variance, whatever you want to call it, it's unavoidable.

By the way, UTG min-raise is the "new" all-in.
“We had all the momentum. We were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look west, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark, that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.” —Raoul Duke, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

Folding is in because then I get to look at my Manny avatar instead of my cards.

As for why I 'went off the charts', I blame you. Ever since you 4 bet me all in with like 7 high in that Venetian tournament a few years back, I've never been the same.
