This is not a bad beat story. I lost this hand but I'm not crying. I'm trying to figure out why.Last 4 tables of a MTT. Blinds are 800/1600. I am short with about 10K and am in SB with K-6 suited (suited, big deal, I know.)I'm familiar with BB player who has shown numerous bluffs and has about 25K in chips. Not that familiar with UTG who has about 12K.UTG calls 1600. Rest of the table folds to me. I complete. BB checks.Flop is J-8-6 rainbow. I check. BB bets 3K. UTG calls.I think BB has nothing and is trying to steal the nearly 5K in the pot. I don't think UTG has a pair or he would have raised. He must have something he likes in order to call but I don't think it is a pair.I think my 6's are the only pair on the table with 5 outs to improve. Also, I'm at the point in the game where I may be blinded off shortly. It seems like crap or get off the pot time. And I think that if I come back at these guys big I could pick up what is now about 11K.So I raise all-in. BB immediately folds. UTG takes a long time and finally calls. He shows 9-7 offsuit for an open ended straight draw. Turn is a 10 and I'm out.Looking back at this, I did it to myself by betting the tourney on bottom pair and creating a pot big enough to make his call correct. My reads were right. My raise was a gamble and probably a dumb one. His call was right. He caught. I lost. Happens. But looking further back I wonder why he stayed in to begin with holding 9-7 offsuit with 7 players to act behind him. This is the part I'm struggling with. Were I in his position I would not have played that hand. But I'm wondering if there is some valid reason for his doing so that I am missing.I'm curious as to what others on the forum think about this. Should he have played this hand at all and, if so, why? Thanks in advance.
My goal is not to win. My goal is to make good decisions. Winning should be a by-product of that.

No, it was a bad pre-flop call by UTG. I'm not crazy about yours either, even from the SB. Fold K-6sooooted there. You have another full orbit before the blinds hit you again. Wait for a better hand.

Push or fold preflop. Limping is weak, especially given your stack size. UTG has shown weakness by limping, and you're giving the BB a free look at the flop. Why call off another $800 of your small stack with the hope of connecting on the flop? Use your fold equity now and make a move...push.
